Sailor?

Sailor is supposedly a German name in orgin, although different sites and information also suggest it could be English, as am I (both English and German that is). It obviously has connections to the sea and boats, as has my family for generations. Given the links, what do people think?

Oh dear no, not good.

TrinityForce · 25/01/2016 21:24

Moon

RiverTam · 25/01/2016 21:27

As you live in Germany you'd be better off getting opinions on a German site. Too many 'hello sailor' connotations in Britain.

mrsschu · 25/01/2016 21:29

Sailor?! It's dreadful. Might be passably cute on a toddler but ridiculous for a teenager or grown man IMO.

LordOfMisrule · 25/01/2016 21:30

Utterly dreadful

CocktailQueen · 25/01/2016 21:31

No way. Horrible. This is Sailor, he's a teacher/lawyer/psychologist - no. Not for an adult.

CelestiaLuna · 25/01/2016 22:32

Christie Brinkley has a daughter called Sailor. I think it's quite sweet for a girl but awful as a boys name. It just sounds feminine to me

villainousbroodmare · 25/01/2016 22:35

I don't feel like it's a name at all. No from me.

Sophronia · 25/01/2016 23:16

No. Selah is much nicer (for a girl)

iciclewinter · 26/01/2016 00:50

I don't really like occupations as first names, sorry.

KoalaDownUnder · 26/01/2016 01:00

Agree that the 'occupations as first names' thing is weird.

Sailor is pretty bad.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 26/01/2016 01:05

It's getting quite popular in the USA (Sailor, Saylor, Saila), I think it's the next Taylor tbh.....

I think it's awful. Sorry.

OttiliaVonBCup · 26/01/2016 09:51

Boy or girl?

BathshebaDarkstone · 26/01/2016 09:58

I thought Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor as well, completely forgot about Dick Emery. As a pp said, probably better to ask on a German site.

Allalonenow · 26/01/2016 10:12

I'm not keen on it.
If you want a name linked to the sea what about Nelson or Drake?

CrystalMcPistol · 26/01/2016 10:53

Fletcher is my favourite occupation name.

WinterBabyHMW · 26/01/2016 11:01

I like it! I would never use it, but if you're brave enough - go for it! :)

babyblabber · 26/01/2016 14:51

I actually love it. Kristin cavallari (?) from the hills just named her daughter sailor and I thought it was lovely but kind of lovely for a kind of celebrity name if you know what I mean. I'd be surprised to meet one in real life.

I don't think I'd use it but as far as unusual names go it's not remotely offensive, the sound is quite nice and I actually think it would be fine on an adult. Go for it!

NadiaWadia · 26/01/2016 18:48

I really don't like 'occupation' names like Hunter, Archer, Mason, Sailor, they all just sound a bit ridiculous, IMO. Then there is the 'Hello Sailor' thing. Why not choose a more normal name?

sugarplumfairy28 · 26/01/2016 19:13

It would be for a boy, and I'm not dead set on it, it's just an idea. I really hate 'normal' names. I have a Miller and Ottilie, neither of which are alien but neither are massively common either.

I'm really struggling with boys names, I find most (no offence) incredibly boring, I couldn't go with anything like Max, Elliot, or even Erza now because they're are so many of them. I want something that is uncommon.

I had previously liked Turner, not at all because it's an occupational name, some incredibly soppy family reason, but now I'm not sure.

LadyLuck81 · 26/01/2016 19:35

I like Turner.

Sofiria · 27/01/2016 12:08

I think it's awful, sorry. Turner is marginally better and usable if you have a family reason/connection, but Sailor just sounds silly as a first name.
