Irish baby names

First post! DH is English, I am Irish and pregnant with DC1. Looking for Irish name suggestions.

Struggling to find names we both like and that DH doesn't immediately associate with just one member of my family/friend/famous person. For example, I like Ronan for a boy but he said it was 'too Boyzone'. I know loads of Ronans so don't think it's an issue and I'm going to be giving birth so think I should get to decide.

We live in inner London. Kids at school will have names from a wide range of countries and cultures, so not worried about the name being unusual in the UK.

Surname starts with F so would prefer to avoid F names. I have a very common Irish girl's name starting with A and would like a different name for any DCs.

Has anyone seen Catastrophe? Very funny scenes in that about calling a baby Muireann.

babyblabber · 22/01/2016 16:42

I'm from Dublin and would say Neev. Much prettier than Nee-uv but that's not why!

I adore the name Senan, please use it!

Also love Lorcan & Sean.

For girls I like Saoirse or Aisling

cecilelliott · 22/01/2016 19:36

Cillian is a truly boys' fabulous name, and very unusual(and therefore fresh-sounding)in the UK

Orla is my favourite girls' name, although it is definitely on the rise here

Good Luck

Can people put pronunciations next to these? I'm finding this a really interesting read and want to make sure I'm pronouncing them correctly. Think I've got most of them but unsure on a few

Searlait? 😂

You can't call a baby Searlait.

They just made that up so people called Charlotte could have an "Irish" name!

Hushabyelullaby · 22/01/2016 21:33

Forgot to mention Eiran/Eireann for a boy

TiddlyFitShaced · 22/01/2016 21:37

A good twenty percent of the names listed here are not remotely Irish!

edengarden123 · 22/01/2016 21:43

Searlait is pn the same as Saorla and that is def an Irish name meaning Nobel Princess (love it) (pn Sayr-la)

StickLadyLou · 22/01/2016 21:47

I'm Irish living in England. Here are some names in my family (lots of cousins). We found it hard avoiding the names of our cousins and settled on Daniel, not actually Irish but hugely popular there. I also really liked Brendan but my DH didn't agree.

Woeful thing to inflict on a child. 😂😂

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 22:00

I'm gonna say it. The most beautiful Irish name of all.................

GOBNAIT

BathtimeFunkster · 22/01/2016 22:02

Maybe a bit too ethereal and pretty for real life.

What if your Gobnait wasn't tiny and dainty and elegant?

Nothing useful to add, except wow, Irish names are beautiful. I don't have a drop of Irish blood in me, but wish I was for some of these names...Sad

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2016 22:06

That's true Bathtime, it is a very dainty and elegant name. And it would be awful if Gobnait turned out to be a florid faced lady pig farmer in size ten wellies.

That would demean the beauty of the name.

BathtimeFunkster · 22/01/2016 22:16

And it would be awful if Gobnait turned out to be a florid faced lady pig farmer in size ten wellies.

Or the last member of the local Legion of Mary, never sure if it was the weight around her middle or the sideburns to blame for her boyfriend of 40 years never popping the question (or her cherry).

That would demean the beauty of the name.

It really would.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 22/01/2016 22:16

Darragh
Turlough
Cathal
Sean
Conleth
Dirmuid
Eoghan (Owen)

That's my favourite boys names.

Can't think of any girls that haven't been mentioned already.
