What does everyone dislike this name?

We're more and more loving the name Archer for our bump if blue. Full name I think would be Archer James W..... (2 syllables).
Archer was my husband's grandfather's name and he was apparently named after a Nobel Prize winning chemist Archer Martin. To me it sounds strong but also nice and olde in a Victorian sort of way.
I know everyone will say if we love it we should go for it... BUT general opinion seems to be against it - esp on baby naming websites!
To my mind this spy tv show of the same name is hardly mainstream and will be over before he's even a toddler?
What are your thoughts good or bad?? If anyone out there loves it let me know! :). Otherwise it's back to the long list....

I wouldn't choose the name, but honestly, YOU have to love it! If you love it, go for it.

Why should we all like the same names? How boring things would be!

MangosteenSoda · 21/01/2016 13:33

Surname trend sprung to mind, but your family history makes it a great choice. Anyway, trend or not, if you love it...

To those saying he will become an Archie, there's an ARCHIBALD in my Ds' playgroup. No shortening permitted.

HaPPy8 · 21/01/2016 13:34

I like it.

LauraChant · 21/01/2016 13:35

I like it. I seem to be the only one whose first thought is "Scott Bakula in Enterprise" though. Grin

RiverTam · 21/01/2016 13:35

I like it, I'm not averse to surname names. And the story sounds lovely. Go for it!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 21/01/2016 13:47

I like it! And I hate all unusual names. :-)

Shemozzle · 21/01/2016 14:31

I love it. I love Arthur and Archie but too popular for me to use, but Archer is similar but different. Sounds a lot cooler too. Funnily enough, I saw someone on A Facebook group say it was their sons name this week and then someone else the day after. It's never been on my radar before.

iciclewinter · 21/01/2016 16:26

Sorry but I don't like it (I said as much on your other thread). I don't like many of the surnamey names, or names ending in "er" (Tyler, Carter, Dexter, Cooper, Spencer etc).

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/01/2016 16:30

I like it, and I hate surnames for first names. I like that he could be Archie if he wanted too. Go for it.

zippyswife · 21/01/2016 16:33

I love it. Strong but unusual.

HairyLittleCarrot · 21/01/2016 16:35

I really like it, and I'm very particular about names!

GlowWine · 21/01/2016 17:18

I'm neutral, definitely not negative through. Go for it if you like it, just don't make the mistake of telling anyone around in advance, it's nobody's business but yours.

TheDowagerCuntess · 21/01/2016 18:01

Do you have another thread running on the same name, OP?

You're never going to find a name that everyone likes, and if you ask for opinions (on forums and in real life), you'll get people saying they don't like it.

We didn't tell a soul what our planned names were - just announced them at birth. I'm certain there were (are!) people who didn't like them, but I'm none the wiser!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer_(TV_series)

I really like the name,

But I do include the above link, just in case you were not aware of the very poplar Archer series, have a look on reddit to get an understanding of it's global popularity, and referencing.

Never tell anyone a baby name until the birth, always causes problems.

RedToothBrush · 21/01/2016 18:22

I like it.

Other people are boring and miserable.

Its not their fault.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 21/01/2016 18:22

We have this name in our family from about 100 years ago! I love it and would also consider it so reading with interest....

BelleMairead2 · 21/01/2016 19:38

I love it.. But have been put off by baby naming sites !

GirlOverboard · 21/01/2016 19:43

I like it. It's unique and interesting.

Doublebubblebubble · 21/01/2016 19:47

I like it. My ds has a surname first name. If you haven't already you should watch Archer on Netflix - it's an awesome name xx

Exhausted01 · 21/01/2016 20:20

I like it and it's nice that it has a family connection.

Izzyathome · 22/01/2016 00:15

Thanks for all the feedback! Those of you who have said so, you're right there will never be 100% approval on a name if you go out and ask for opinions. But it's been useful to hear all sides as we were unsure ourselves. Archer has been a real Marmite name - I've heard everything from 'chavvy' to 'classic' and 'perfect'. We definitely both still like it a lot & there's not many we agree on!
Not sharing our girls name with the fam etc for that reason, we know it's the one (I hope!) Some months to go...

HolditFinger · 22/01/2016 00:36

We called our daughter a very unusual flower name. A news reporter shares her name and that's where I heard it.

She could have been an Olivia or a Lily, like ten other kids in her year. Don't worry about people being rude. There are enough unusual names nowadays that nobody will bat an eye in twenty years.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 22/01/2016 01:12

Archer is a great name.

{Adding to my own personal list}

Raines100 · 22/01/2016 06:27

I think Archer is fab. We went for a marmite name for DS1. People said all sorts. Someone said it was really pretentious; someone said it was chavvy. I realised I could never please everybody and stopped worrying about it. DS now loves his name, and Im really pleased we went for it.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 22/01/2016 06:46

Love it. and with the family connection to, it's perfect. NN Archie if you/he want. Just be prepared for people to mishear and call him Arthur...
