What does everyone dislike this name?

We're more and more loving the name Archer for our bump if blue. Full name I think would be Archer James W..... (2 syllables).
Archer was my husband's grandfather's name and he was apparently named after a Nobel Prize winning chemist Archer Martin. To me it sounds strong but also nice and olde in a Victorian sort of way.
I know everyone will say if we love it we should go for it... BUT general opinion seems to be against it - esp on baby naming websites!
To my mind this spy tv show of the same name is hardly mainstream and will be over before he's even a toddler?
What are your thoughts good or bad?? If anyone out there loves it let me know! :). Otherwise it's back to the long list....

I don't like or dislike it. I wouldn't bat an eyelid if somebody intrdouced their baby to me as Archer but I wouldn't gush over the name either.

elizalovelace · 21/01/2016 07:35

I love it! He could choose to be known as Archie which is lovely. I think of Robin Hood when I hear itBlush.

AuldAlliance · 21/01/2016 07:35

Apart from thinking of Henry James and then hearing the Archers' theme tune every time I read the name, it's actually quite nice.
And no toddler/young child is going to hum "dum te dum te dum te dum" every time your DS hoves into view, so if you like it, why not. But he will get called Archie.

Kathysclown · 21/01/2016 07:54

I love it! It is a solid sounding name, sounds very traditional (although obviously it isn't common) and I love the story behind it - I'd use it!

TeenAndTween · 21/01/2016 07:58

I think it sounds too much like a surname personally.

And it reminds me of The Archers (and would also remind DD age 11 of it too as she has grown up listening to them).

If on the other hand you named him James Archer W you could still have the Archer name in there (that he could switch to if he wanted) but a nice solid sensible timeless boys name at the start.

Footle · 21/01/2016 08:09

Yes but you'd also have the initials JAW. Archer is a brilliant name - I know a small one.

Tactfulcactus · 21/01/2016 08:18

My first thought was also the infamous Jeffrey. Not a nice man. Also really dislike surnames used as first names. Ok as a middle name I guess.
Nice family story though.

mrsjskelton · 21/01/2016 08:33

It's a great name - not so different to Arthur and people love that.

Issie339 · 21/01/2016 08:37

I really like it but then I do tend to like more modern names and surname type names as first names. Definitely not try hard or silly at all to me.

It's also one of the surnamey names people seem to think are more acceptable (from my experience) and have a bit more gravitas such as Dexter, Lincoln etc.

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 21/01/2016 08:39

I like it

SugarDiabetes · 21/01/2016 08:42

I think it's lovely

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 21/01/2016 08:43

A stronger version of Archie, I like it. Archie is a bit twee so Archer sounds more grown up and masculine. I can't imagine a 40 yo Archie but Archer I can.

Duckdeamon · 21/01/2016 08:44

It sounds "modern" / trendy and try-hard to me.

Gosh, it's absolutely fine - just use it. People get used to names way, way more quickly than you'd think! My friend used it as a middle name for her PFB.

AlisonWunderland · 21/01/2016 08:51

I'm very mainstream (boring) when it comes to names, but I like Archer as a first name.
Unusual without being a WTF name, and totally obvious spelling keeps it simple.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/01/2016 08:53

Love it!

Getit · 21/01/2016 08:53

Love it

BitOutOfPractice · 21/01/2016 10:29

I rather like it. What are you planning on calling the baby if you name the bump Archer?

Mouseinahole · 21/01/2016 13:04

I like it.

ThatsHowYouGetAnts · 21/01/2016 13:15

I think it's a fine name.

I am a huge fan of the TV programme but most people haven't even heard of it. It's got a cult following but no, I definitely don't think it's an association you / DS would need to worry about.

Whathaveilost · 21/01/2016 13:18

I don't really like it but that means nowt!

If you love it, honestly go for it.

wonkylegs · 21/01/2016 13:23

I personally couldn't use it after watching Archer the adult cartoon (fab but also just wrong) but as a name it's ok and you have a nice reason for using it.

Provencalroseparadox · 21/01/2016 13:30

I like it too
