Looking fir a girls name and wondered re Scottish Islands

Anyone think of anything . I know the usual
Islay iona rona etc

They are! A girl who was a family friend had the name.

I just googled her and she's alive and well and living in Scotland so there!

There's also Irish names that are used in Scotland a lot, such as Caitlin , which I think is pronounced Catch Leen in Ireland .

If you want a name that makes a statement and will make people ask " oh that's unusual , I've never heard of that , where does it come from ? " , then go for another loch or island name or the American type names ( that a PP assures me are Scottish but don't appear to be popular on any of the Registrar generals lists ) .

Best bit of the site is looking back at the 70s archives - it's like looking at a class register from my childhood!

I love that site too eagle, it satisfies the statistics geek in me. Also my son has quite an unusual name so it's interesting to look at how many are born. About half a dozen or so since 2001 iirc.

Another couple of loch names I've seen used as girls' names: Katrine, Marlee. I also like the place name Aylith used as a name - it's a very soft, pretty sound to me.

Coming in very late here re. Islay, but thought I'd mention that this was traditionally a boy name from the 17th century, especially in the Campbell family. It was generally spelled Ilay, (the 's' is a fairly recent addition) and pronounced with an -ay sound on the end. The -ah ending is also a fairly recent development.

There rea still a few boys who get the name Islay, and I always assume it's pronounced I -lay, although that could easily be wrong.

Personally I'd stick to Isla for girls if that's the sound you're after (if you wanted that name).

For boys, why not consider the Munros....

DS2 was almost called Cairn as we were trying to name him by sticking pins in a map

We also considered Moray (know a girl called this too), Ross, Merrick, Ben, Blaven, Nairn, Lorne, Munro and Jura. Sure there were more but can't remember.
