What about Eilidh pron. ail-ay? Not an island name AFAIK, but a very pretty Scottish name.

BuckBuckBuckBuckBuck · 13/12/2015 01:33

I know a Kerrera.

squoosh · 13/12/2015 01:42

I think it's ay-lee

DivaDroid · 13/12/2015 10:29

It's not Squoosh. I know several (live in NE Scotland & lived in Scotland my whole life). Eilidh is definitely Ail-ay when pronounced in Scotland, I've never heard it pronounced any other way Smile

Salmotrutta · 13/12/2015 10:45

fluffygreen - sorry to be pedantic but Islay is indeed pronounced just like Isla.

I know a family from there Grin

tabulahrasa · 13/12/2015 10:50

Eilidh is usually aylee at least it is in the north west and the central belt, I've never heard it pronounced as aylay.

I wouldn't go with Kerrera, I've never heard anyone that's not from nearby pronounce that right.

florascotianew · 13/12/2015 11:45

Eilidh is the Scottish Gaelic version of Helen. It's quite popular - in top 20 in Scotland in 2014 www.nrscotland.gov.uk/filesstatistics/popular-forenames/2014/babiesnames-2014-t5.pdf

The people I know with that name say something in between 'Ayl-ih' and 'Ayl-ee', in other words a slightly shorter vowel sound at the end than (for example) 'Maisie'.

SauvignonPlonker · 13/12/2015 12:00

DD was very nearly Eiilidh, but we felt she'd have a lifetime of spelling her name to others.

Isobel, Flora, Eilish, Ailis, Caitriona, Lindsay, Fiona,

MitzyLeFrouf · 13/12/2015 12:25

I live in Glasgow and all the ones I know pronounce it ay-lee.

wigglybeezer · 13/12/2015 13:00

Aw, I thought I was going to be the only one suggesting Vaila, it's such a tiny island in the Shetland that most people haven't heard of it. I only know of it because it's the name of my parents' house!

brookeberry · 13/12/2015 14:16

Vaila is lovely. I also like Flora as a Scottish name.

FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 13/12/2015 14:38

I know a Taransay

Also you don't pronounce the 'lau' at the end of Isla. You just say it like Isla.

BelindaBagwash · 13/12/2015 15:46

NE Scotland here and Eilidh is pronounced as Ay-lay, not Ay-lee. There are a few girls with the spelling Ailie as their parents obviously don't want them having to spend their time explaining how their name is spelled Sad

EagleRay · 13/12/2015 17:03

This thread is timely for me as started thinking about girls' names today for DD2 who is due next year. I was born and brought up very close to some of the aforementioned names and kind of decided today to use a local place name as a middle name. It's not at all girly but feels right to use it anyhow Smile

Kr1stina · 13/12/2015 17:09

Morven

Not an island I know but easy to spell and pronounce

Keeptrudging · 13/12/2015 17:12

Never heard Eilidh pronounced any other way than Ay-lee. I'm Scottish, have lived all over Scotland, and am also in the North - East, where I have taught many of them/have friends called Eilidh.

Love Vaila, it's very pretty.

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/12/2015 17:14

I only know one Morven - he's a man.

MitzyLeFrouf · 13/12/2015 17:17

Morven is lovely.

Poor male Morven though

Dumbledoresgirl · 13/12/2015 17:21

Really? It's known as a girl's name is it? I only know it in the context of this one man. How funny. Grin

drspouse · 13/12/2015 17:21

I know a family who have girls with names on these themes and a boy in the extended family is called Harris.

Walkingonsunshine00 · 13/12/2015 17:27

Islay can be pronounced as Isla or Islay - I know people who pronounce both ways.

Shosha1 · 13/12/2015 17:40

In our family we have a Faray, Cava (pronounced Cave a) Skye and a Shona. All girls

fuckweasel · 13/12/2015 17:40

Islay can be pronounced as Isla or Islay - I know people who pronounce both ways.

Agree. I know several people who live reasonably nearby (born and bred) who pronounce it 'Islay'.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 13/12/2015 17:47

Ailsa reminds me of the woman from Home & Away with a bad perm and a hamburger phone.

"Hello, Bayside Diner"

I love Morven and Skye.
