Zebedee

Too utterly utter?

Love the nn Zeb as does DH and he rather unexpectedly said that he had fallen for Zebedee last night (having initially vetoed a couple of months ago). He's not keen on Zebediah which I guess would be the most 'sensible' alternative.

We already have a DS with a name that's not particularly unusual but hardly encountered on a daily basis. We think it would go well with Zebedee/Zeb so that's not a consideration...

Well, it might have done, but it passes the respectable career test.

waitingimpatient · 18/11/2015 13:07

I have a little Zebulon in my family, it's a lovely name and less of a connection to the magic roundabout than zebedee!!

TillyTolly · 18/11/2015 13:18

Nope. Not at all cool. Died in the wool Waitrose-shopping, John Lewis-loving, boring professionals. Fairly confident that nobody meeting us or the hypothetical Zeb for the first time would mistakenly think that we were trying to look cool.

*If there's one thing I would back myself on in the cool stakes, though, it would be in attempting to treat other people's genuine questions with respectful answers. Grin

Thanks JasperDamerel - I keep thinking of him too. And Zebedee Jones. Maybe it's a sign that it works best when your surname rhymes with 'owns'?!

Zebulon seems more 'out there' to me than Zebedee but I do like it, and it's another route to Zeb. Will make the suggestion this evening. Thanks!

I wouldn't do it personally but if you are attracted to fairly 'out there' names then everything standard is going to seem very boring. But Zebedee? I would think that 99% of teenage boys would die inside of embarrassment of having that name - sorry! It's tempting to indulge yourself by having a baby with this name, but please think of your future grown up son!

Twitterqueen · 18/11/2015 13:27

Er... can I just say OP that it's dyed in the wool, not died Xmas Grin

Dylan would be better or Zach as others have said.

Too many boing boing and 'time for bed' jokes

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/11/2015 13:27

In fact - and I never ever EVER normally say this - why not just register his nickname Zeb as his full name?

TillyTolly · 18/11/2015 13:29

Oh God Twitterqueen, I'm dying of embarrassment.

SoWhite · 18/11/2015 13:31

Poor Zebedee Soanes, his sisters are Anna and Rebecca.

shutupanddance · 18/11/2015 13:32

Mwaaah no!!! Zeb is nice

Twitterqueen · 18/11/2015 13:33

TillyTolly clearly you will never be able to hold your head up in Waitrose ever again.

Blame it on the mobile phone / autocorrect. That's what I do!

TillyTolly · 18/11/2015 13:35

Mouthfulofquiz, I have considered this but I have a thing about giving babies longer names that are more adaptable or sensible later on. I realise that this flies in the face of 'Zebedee' altogether. Am going to be forced to use DH's (frankly ridiculous) MN this time round (if baby is a boy - we don't and won't know) so may explore the option of going for another very boring and sensible MN between the two to give him that option.

rainbowstardrops · 18/11/2015 13:40

I'm sorry but I don't like Zebedee. I love Zeb though. A lot!

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/11/2015 13:49

I very much agree with you under normal circs. It does seem a shame to give a possible son a name that you are pretty sure he won't like and to give a back up middle name that you aren't even that keen on either...
Poor kid can't win!

SoWhite · 18/11/2015 13:51

What's the terrible, DH-approved middle name?

Would I be right in guessing that its a his-family burden?

TillyTolly · 18/11/2015 14:10

Very much a his-family burden SoWhite. I managed to avoid bestowing it upon DS with the argument that I'd taken (both!) of his surnames and wanted to use a family name from my side.

Chococroc · 18/11/2015 14:23

I love the name Zebedee, and Zeb even more!

celtictoast · 18/11/2015 14:43

I think Zebedee is a fantastic name.

It fits with the Old Testament trend of names like Elias, Ezekiel, Isaac etc.

The Magic Roundabout was ages ago and there are plenty of other names which happen to be film/TV characters.

Peaceloveandpartyrings · 18/11/2015 15:28

Can I just say thanks for the mid-afternoon conjuring of Zeb Soanes? He is the hottest newsreader around. Mmm, Zeb Soanes...

JellyBaby26 · 18/11/2015 15:38

The name reminds me of Football Factory "Zeeba fuckin' dee"!

SoWhite · 18/11/2015 16:33

I managed to avoid bestowing it upon DS with the argument that I'd taken (both!) of his surnames and wanted to use a family name from my side.

I'd say that argument is still valid for DS2 OP. I'd start calling him a sheep too, with no imagination other that the 'rules' imposed by his family, who obviously think for him. (Said sarcastically, but with intent to niggle at him).

Don't use a name you don't like! The kid's got his surname already!

SoWhite · 18/11/2015 16:34

Strikeout was meant to be italics. Whoops.

banff82 · 18/11/2015 18:52

Zeb is ok, because it basically sounds like Seb, but Zebedee is pretty bad. Think of him as a teenager and adult with the name - would your DH like to be called Zebedee?! Zebulon is worse though, it sounds like a made-up planet in Star Trek or Men in Black!

TillyTolly · 18/11/2015 20:02

I honestly think my OH would be quite pleased to be called Zebedee but he's a pretty confident chap who's grown up with a very run of the mill name...

OP posts:
eastwest · 18/11/2015 20:04

Really not. Sorry. I mean if you love it, go ahead of course.
