Due after Christmas and I don't seem to have a clue with names this round.

This is the shortlist. I'm open to honest opinions and ideas (you can see from the list I don't really have a type other than I'm not keen on anything cutesy!)

Thanks!

Girls:
Verity
Elizabeth
Anna
Indigo (still my favourite but is it even a name?! And is it too pretentious?!!)

Boys;
Kit
Heath
Oran
Rex
Jude
Ralph (pronounced rafe.. In theory)
Elliott

If you could stick a middle name on them too even better!!!!

I think I'm fairly traditional so I like the girls names bar Indigo. of the boys names i only like jude and elliott

starkers1 · 02/11/2015 13:35

Zippy-boy names you and I have v similar taste, from your list like Kit
Heath but really love Rex and Jude.

Both are still classic names that have had a recent (but not overly popular) comeback, yet till feel different/unique enough. They are fun, strong, energetic and masculine.

Your girl names in contrast are all very classic and not very different/unique -apart from Indigo! Like Anna and Elizabeth best.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 02/11/2015 13:42

I think Indigo would be a boy's name. India maybe for a DD??

I like all the others in this order
Anna
Elizabeth
Verity

Jude
Rex

Kit - is a nice nickname, but not a name
Heath - is awful
Oran - never heard it, and dont like it. How about Arran?
Ralph - don't like it however you pronounce it
Elliott - I think this one is chavvy

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 02/11/2015 13:53

I like Verity, it's classic but not overused, I've only ever known a couple, one of whom would now be in her 20s! Elizabeth and Anna are both lovely names as well, but your choices suggest you prefer less popular names? I'm not a fan of Indigo

No don't call your child Ralph pronounced Rafe. He will spend his life correcting people. Either call him Rafe or pick a different name altogether. I like Kit and Elliott.

Vernonon · 02/11/2015 13:56

Love your girls names but not Indigo. Hate Heath and Oran. I love Kit but would consider having Christopher on the BC

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 02/11/2015 14:03

Anna is by far my favourite from your girls' list. A beautiful classic name, international and elegant.

Boys I'm not sure we have the same taste but I'd use Kit as a nickname rather than a name on its own too. If you like short punchy, possibly surnamey, boys' names, I'd suggest Pierce. I knew one a few years back and always thought it was an unusual but not outlandish name.

AuntGertrude · 02/11/2015 14:11

All your girls' names are great; Indigo could go for a boy's name too.

Of the boys' names, only Kit (but with the full name Christopher), and Jude and Ralph (pronounced Rafe) are my preferred ones from your list. Oran in particular is unattractively outlandish (makes me think - Orange; Orang-utan; Orran? Ore-ran?)

IoraRua · 02/11/2015 14:11

Oran is by far my fave of your boys names, love it. Rex = dog or possibly toilet paper. Kit is fine, as are Heath and Elliott. Kit would be too nicknamey for my tastes though. I hate the name Jude, can't quite work out why! And Ralph...always seems wet to me but nothing wrong with it as such.

Indigo is terrible.
Elizabeth - fine. Meh tbh, but fine.
Anna - no, they and Hannahs are everywhere in schools. Overused.
Verity - beautiful

Allalonenow · 02/11/2015 14:14

Verity is my favourite from your list, though I don't like Indigo at all, unless she is going to have a career as a burlesque dancer.

I like Ralph very much, and Rex is fine too, my least favourites are Heath and Oran.

MrsCaecilius · 02/11/2015 14:18

Girls:
Verity - pretty. I'd expect her to be well spoken and curvy with long dark blond hair (quite specific, I know)
Elizabeth - classic, don't like Lizzie or Liz. A bit boring?
Anna - classic but forgettable.
Indigo (still my favourite but is it even a name?! And is it too pretentious?!!) - no, a colour not a name and too close to Inigo (boy's name)

Boys;
Kit - nn for Christopher not on its own
Heath - Ledger. No. Awful.Oran
Rex - dog's name
Jude - the obscure? or Hey Jude? No.
Ralph (pronounced rafe.. In theory) - he will constantly be correcting people on the pronunciation. No.
Elliott - chavvy

CakeRattleandRoll · 02/11/2015 14:18

My favourites are Verity and Rex.
I would use Kit as nn for Kester.

zippyswife · 02/11/2015 14:19

Thanks for all the responses. Glad to hear honest opinions. Though there seems to be no kind of consensus but maybe that's because there is no type or pattern to them!

zippyswife · 02/11/2015 14:20

Ohh cake like the idea of kester nn kit!

OP posts:
Cliffdiver · 02/11/2015 17:23

I love Verity and Elliot.

DD2 was almost Verity, we chose a similar name.

LeaLeander · 02/11/2015 17:29

Consider India rather than Indigo for a girl. The others are fine. Verity might end up as "Rita" though.

India Elizabeth?

Verity Anna?
Verity Elizabeth?
Anna Elizabeth?
not India Anna, please

Kit -- sounds like a name for a tomboy girl, to be honest. Can you picture an adult man in a serious professional introducing himself as Kit, or Oran? Or Rex, unless he's a stage actor.

Really don't like the other boys names. If you want Rafe, name him Rafe or Raphael. Not Ralph.

Depends on the juxtaposition with the surname, too.

Tirfarthoin · 02/11/2015 17:31

I like Indigo. Colour names are really popular at the moment with Ambers, Scarletts, Siennas and Blus all over the place. The only draw back is it is associated with the whole indigo child thing. I have met a little girl called Indigo though and it seemed just right. Also recently met a Silva which is lovely.

Allalonenow · 02/11/2015 17:44

Just back to say how much I like Kester, and suggest Keir.
Also like Inigo for a boy.

zippyswife · 02/11/2015 17:45

I don't like the name India or Indiana. Just indigo. What's the indigo child thing?.... Off to google.

I loved the name Rita before Rita ora. Now I'm not as keen. I thought a nn for verity could be etta which I love in its own too.

elor11 · 02/11/2015 17:47

Seems everyone has different opinions on each of your suggestions.
Verity I don't like at all.
Elizabeth- love it alot.
Anna- lovely
Indigo- I always love the idea of nn Indi. Not sure I would be brave enough to call my daughter this tho although nothing wrong with it.

Boys;
Kit, Heath, Jude, Elliot all nice. Especially think Heath is a cool name. Although would never use as I am sure my gran would be convinced his name was Keith!
Oran, Rex. I dislike both lots
Ralph I have no thoughts of really. I wouldn't try and pronounce it differently as that is going to be confusing and annoying.

highnrg123 · 02/11/2015 17:56

i love indigo.. and indy is such a cute nickname.
It's on my list but i have a friend indigo so can't use it

BondJayneBond · 02/11/2015 17:56

I love Verity and Jude.

Dislike Oran and Rex.

If you want Ralph to be pronounced Rafe, then I think you should spell it as Rafe, because most people will automatically pronounce it the other way.

Tirfarthoin · 02/11/2015 18:06

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigo_children
I read about it a few years ago, it's just standard special snowflake stuff. I wouldn't let it out you off a lovely name as it will be ancient history by the time she is 20 Grin

maybebabybee · 02/11/2015 18:07

Girls:
Verity - bit flouncy
Elizabeth - meh, bit dull
Anna - quite like Annie, don't like Anna much
Indigo (still my favourite but is it even a name?! And is it too pretentious?!!) - I find it a bit poncey if I'm honest

Boys;
Kit - like
Heath - too flouncy for me
Oran - think no one would know how to pronounce it
Rex - I quite like it but I'm afraid it is a dog's name
Jude - quite like
Ralph (pronounced rafe.. In theory) - no no no no no. SO posh it's unreal
Elliott - quite cute

Tirfarthoin · 02/11/2015 18:10

A total of five of the names on your list belong to close family members of mine so I am very biased when I say I love them all Grin

Only1scoop · 02/11/2015 18:12

Girls all lovely

other than 'indigo'

Reminds me of the Marks and Sparks everyday indigo section in clothing.
