What can Bert/Bertie be short for?

I love the name Bert/Bertie but it doesn't really go with my surname (starts with H, one syllable). I think the first name should be at least 2 syllables or it just sounds too short; I think Bertie is ok for a nickname but not a first name.

My sister wants Herbert, and as much as I love the alliteration, I just can't stop thinking about the negative connotations associated with the name.

What else can Bert be short for? I've only got Albert (no), Cuthbert (definitely no!), Hubert and Robert (already have a Hugh and a Robert in close family circles). I'm stuck after that!

The other boy names I like are Henry (but worried it is too popular and will be shortened to Harry?) and Toby (which no one likes)...... please help!

Reverend W Awdry (of Thomas the Tank Engine fame) was called Wilbert.

Have to say, he is the only Wilbert I have ever heard of, but not a bad namesake, perhaps.

Quite chuffed that 2 people like my name suggestion Grin.

I like Wilbert and Gilbert . The character Gilbert in Anne of Green Gables was lovely so good associations.

My daughter is called Sophie and her nickname is Bert. I have no idea why. That doesn't help you much though:)

Wilbur rather than Wilbert?

What about Burton?

Or Bernard

Ooh Adalbert is a good suggestion. Robert is a good name too and gives Rob, Bob, Robbie and Bobby as well as Bertie.

Santas, are you thinking of Alberto Frog and his Amazing Animal Band , that was part of the Bod programme?
