What can Bert/Bertie be short for?

I love the name Bert/Bertie but it doesn't really go with my surname (starts with H, one syllable). I think the first name should be at least 2 syllables or it just sounds too short; I think Bertie is ok for a nickname but not a first name.

My sister wants Herbert, and as much as I love the alliteration, I just can't stop thinking about the negative connotations associated with the name.

What else can Bert be short for? I've only got Albert (no), Cuthbert (definitely no!), Hubert and Robert (already have a Hugh and a Robert in close family circles). I'm stuck after that!

The other boy names I like are Henry (but worried it is too popular and will be shortened to Harry?) and Toby (which no one likes)...... please help!

Bertram?

BreeVDKamp · 23/10/2015 15:16

Umberto!

MrsAukerman · 23/10/2015 15:19

Bertrand

PallasCat · 23/10/2015 15:21

Bertie Wooster was a Bertram, so that gets my vote!

1wokeuplikethis · 23/10/2015 15:21

Gilbert

INeedACheeseSlicer · 23/10/2015 15:22

Osbert
Wilbert
Bertram
Dilbert
Aubert
Bertrand
Norbert
Colbert
Engelbert
Egbert
Gilbert

Don't like any of them personally, I reckon Herbert or Albert are better bets than any of them.

SoMuchToBits · 23/10/2015 15:22

Ethelbert, Engelbert? Probably not...

dlwelly · 23/10/2015 15:24

Rupert at a push?

CalypsoLilt · 23/10/2015 15:27

A friend if mine has a Bertie shortened from Hubert - rather lovely as if he isn't keen on Bertie when he grows up then Hugh is also an option

CalypsoLilt · 23/10/2015 15:30

already have a Hugh in close family, they pipped me to the post :(

Monsters! Hubert would be a bit close then - but if you were going for Bertie then that wouldn't be too bad. It is a bit pedestrian but I have a friend called Robert who goes by Bertie

florascotianew · 23/10/2015 16:14

Adalbert

Heribert

Berthold (as in Brecht)

Bertil (Scandinavian form of Berthold)

I really rather like Cuthbert and it has a great meaning = famous+bright

icklekid · 23/10/2015 16:15

Bernard?

rainbowstardrops · 23/10/2015 16:18

I quite like Bertie but I'm sorry I don't like any of the other names.
Would you consider just using Bertie?

Sophronia · 23/10/2015 16:32

Bertalan (Hungarian form of Bartholomew!)
Norbert
Humbert
Colbert
Aubert
Haribert
Gilbert
Delbert

TillyTolly · 23/10/2015 16:33

We have EXACTLY the same issue as you (minus the short surname) and I could have written the original post. The closest we've got to compromise is Bertram.

Albert vetoed by DH due to piercing connotations. I would happily have Bernard but he says no to that too...

Off to research Wilbert now though... That has real legs as OH loves Wilfred :) Thanks.

helentheheron · 23/10/2015 17:03

Robert

chipsandpeas · 23/10/2015 17:19

gilbert

Filiberto

There's a little Bertie at DD's school who is just Bertie. He's possibly 9 or 10. If you actually don't like any of the longer names then it's better to just not have one. Maybe make sure you have a more neutral middle name for him, should he outgrow Bertie?

I almost spat my coffee out at Umberto Grin. Why does that name make me think of a frog? Confused

Go for Wilbert, OP.

Hayels · 23/10/2015 17:42

My DB calls his niece Bert. She's an Elizabeth. She's only 2 so doesn't care, yet!
