Cordelia or Robyn - just can't decide.

Please help! We just can't decide. What do people prefer? We'd probably use Cordy day to day for Cordelia.

Definitely Robyn.

I like Cordelia but it seems more like a fantasy/fictional type name to me than one which actually gets used for real people. I'm sure there are some out there though. And Cordy is cute.

Robyn Cordelia sounds good?

Fissues · 21/10/2015 15:56

Depending on your political leanings, you could combine both names and go for Corbyn Grin

Binkybix · 21/10/2015 15:56

The middle name will be my mum's name, so having one as the middle name isn't an option sadly.

Grin Fissues

Grin strangely enough I pointed out the 'Corbyn' option to DH this morning!

Cordelia - so lovely! And I like Cordy as a nickname.

smartyclogs · 21/10/2015 17:31

They are very different styles of names...
Cordelia, sounds quite posh to me. Along the lines of Ottilie and Ophelia.

I prefer Robin, spelt with an 'i'.

aoife24 · 21/10/2015 18:09

I really dislike the spelling Robyn too, just use 'Robin'

dotdotdotmustdash · 21/10/2015 18:11

What about Corrie instead of Cordy?

mrsschu · 21/10/2015 19:10

I really dislike Robyn/Robin for a boy or girl. It just sounds so bleuh. Cordelia is ok, if a little bit pretentious sounding (but you may like that), Cordy as a nn is awful. For some reason it makes me think of umbilical cord... In summary, go with Cordelia, no nn.

Junosmum · 21/10/2015 22:44

Cordelia. I'm surprised that Cordy isn't considered the 'norm' for a nickname but maybe I watch too much Buffy!

applecatchers36 · 21/10/2015 23:00

Cordelia is a right mouthful IMO

You have to accept that people will shorten your children's name, so it depends how you feel about nn Cordy or Delia

Pandora97 · 21/10/2015 23:42

Cordelia is a wonderful name and far nicer than Robyn IMO.

whatdoIget · 21/10/2015 23:59

Cordelia, by a mile

jorahmormont · 22/10/2015 01:18

Robyn.

Cordelia/Cordy is awful.

DancingDinosaur · 22/10/2015 01:24

I don't really like either but prefer Robyn out of the two. Not helpful I know.

ashesandfire · 22/10/2015 06:45

They are very different names IMO, Cordelia is frilly and a bit pretentious sounding, Robyn is simple and unisex.
I think Cordelia is a bit marmite. I am not a fan, sorry. I think Cordy is a bit odd too.
I like Robyn.

nooka · 22/10/2015 07:03

I have a relative called Cordelia, and think it's both pretty and strong. She's not known as Cordy, which I don't think is either!

I like Robin, but think Robyn is ugly looking, it's after the bird surely so why the strange 'y'? I don't understand why it's considered the feminine form when Robin looks so much nicer.

So for me either Cordelia not Cordy or Robin not Robyn.

Binkybix · 22/10/2015 07:34

I'm also a Buffy fan, which is why any other shortening just seems odd to me. And I also do prefer 'Robin' as a spelling - just don't want her to spend all the time correcting it.

Aaaaahh!! I think I might have gone off both. I'm in a name panic and this baby is getting on a bit now.

Imgivinguponyou · 22/10/2015 07:38

I like both names (Cordy is awful though, why would you choose a horrible nickname for a beautiful name?)

Binkybix · 22/10/2015 07:41

Well, clearly I don't think it is a horrible nickname! I'm not that slavish a Buffy fan.

Oooh. Buffy? Grin

LauraChant · 22/10/2015 09:51

I think Cordy is a lovely shortening but I am also a Buffy fan and tried to sneak Anya on our list because of it.

I don't think people would necessarily assume Robin was spelt Robyn - I think she would be correcting it with either spelling. I would assume the spelling Robin probably.

nooka · 22/10/2015 09:53

Well both names are objectively fine, I doubt a Cordelia known as Cordy or a Robyn even with the 'y' will have any issues with either name :)

Still if a thread puts you off a name rather than making you defensive of it's wonderfulness then you probably haven't found the one yet. I'm sure you will!

We spend about eight months trying to find a boys name we both liked, finally found the one. Then our anticipated ds turned out to be dd instead Grin so we opted for the name we would have given ds if he'd been a boy, with hardly any thought at all!

Sadik · 22/10/2015 10:05

I love both of them

Pluses/minuses:
Cordelia

Pluses - lots of options when she's older if she wants to use a different shortening. I agree Cordy is probably the nicest nname, but it's always good to have choices. It's also a very 'classic' name in its entirety.

Minuses - What if she decides aged 7 that she wants to be called Delia? Will you mind?

Robyn (or Robin, both nice IMO)
Pluses Less likely to be shortened, very pretty for a little one but still good on a grown up woman.

Minuses - if it does get shortened, it's likely to be Bobby (maybe this isn't a minus for you, but it would be for me!)

MrsCaecilius · 22/10/2015 10:51

Love Cordelia. Classic and elegant without being dull.

I'm not a fan of unisex names either, or spellings substituting 'y' for 'i' in almost any context so I really dislike Robyn!
