I met a little baby boy today called Nevada. I just wondered what everyone's opinion of it was?

Not keen, people shouldn't have place names!

LucyInTheSkyWithDonuts · 20/10/2015 19:52

Of all the US States to name a child after, I wouldn't choose Nevada....

vestandknickers · 20/10/2015 19:52

It's a no from me!

Thoughtfulduck · 20/10/2015 19:55

I have to admit I am not keen! It sounds feminine to me, but I don't like it for a girl either.

I am not keen on place name names. But of those names at least some are funky or aspirational places.

Nevada, not so much...

florascotianew · 20/10/2015 20:11

Nevada is a Spanish word meaning 'snowfall' or 'snowy' (as in Sierra Nevada = Snowy Mountain Range) - and the origin of the name of the US state.

Very odd name for a person, male or female.

IjonTichy · 20/10/2015 20:56

Makes me think of Nevada Smith, I wonder if that was the inspiration...

lachattequirit · 20/10/2015 21:48

I don't really like it but I prefer it to a lot of the names that are really popular. At least it's not boring.

scatterthenuns · 20/10/2015 22:03

I've heard worse. Tennessee Williams is a very cool name, so I kinda get it. Wouldn't give such overtly American monikers to my kids though.

helentheheron · 20/10/2015 22:07

It's better than Harlow.

PatrickPolarBear · 20/10/2015 22:11

Would definitely be looked at oddly if they ever moved to a Spanish-speaking country. 'This is my son - his name is Snowy' Hmm

mrsschu · 20/10/2015 22:25

Dreadful. When did it become "cool" to name your child after an American state/town etc?

HackerFucker22 · 20/10/2015 22:27

Not the most awful name in the world, but sounds quite masculine. It's not at all to my taste though!!

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2015 22:30

Tennessee Williams was a nickname,

BreeVDKamp · 20/10/2015 22:34

Reese Witherspoon's son really is called Tennessee.

In my dreams I have a son called California (obviously would never actually use that in a million years, but would love to be bohemian enough to have a little surfer Cal)

Allalonenow · 20/10/2015 22:34

I'm not keen on it, especially for a boy, as the A ending gives it a female ending.

(I think Rickmansworth is a good strong male name} Smile

BreeVDKamp · 20/10/2015 22:36

Future DD is called Adelaide, but I guess that's different as it is a real name to start with, like Charlotte and Victoria. Was Florence a place or a name first?

Anyway, Nevada. I'd never use it but don't find it offensive! Little Nev. Hmm. Reminds me of Neville.

mummymafia · 20/10/2015 23:02

Nope not good. My friend was at a play group with her twins the other day & she met an Anakin! I begged her to call her two Luke & Leai whilst she was there but she wouldn't. Grin

AllOfTheCoffee · 20/10/2015 23:14

I was in a waiting room once and a woman called to a child standing by a water thingy "Alabama, would you fetch Georgia a water too, Montana knocked hers over"

No one ever believes me but I swear it's true, I just hope they were playing some kind of game or they were nicknames.

Borninthe60s · 20/10/2015 23:26

Awful

timelytess · 20/10/2015 23:28

Nevada? For heaven's sake...

reuset · 21/10/2015 01:03

Bleee

Though I know of a Dakota (girl in this case) which I think is also very silly name.

Bellejournee · 21/10/2015 08:44

I noticed on Facebook an old school friend has named her son Harlem. Not to my taste, but each to their own.
