I met a little baby boy today called Nevada. I just wondered what everyone's opinion of it was?

Tennessee Williams was a nickname,

List of now first names that started off as Nicknames:

Not hard is it? Names evolve.

Yes, lots of names started out as nicknames. And while they aren't to my taste, I can't get massively worked up about names like Tennessee and London. I'm not keen, but I'm not keen on established ones like Paris and India either.

But Nevada? People will still primarily think of the state. Which is famous for what? Prostitution, gambling and nuclear testing? I think I'd pick another state!!

smartyclogs · 21/10/2015 11:11

Maybe he has Amsterdam and Soho as brothers! Grin

DeepBlueLake · 21/10/2015 11:17

I am generally a fan of US state / town names but even I have to draw a line at Nevada, not a state with very good connotations. Sounds like more of a girls name anyway

CordeliaFrost · 21/10/2015 11:20

I have an American cousin whose birth name is Nevada. She's 27 now. She is no longer known as Nevada though, she reverted to her middle name in her teens, and I can't say I blame her.

I think of Nevada too, though I agree that prostitution and gambling are higher profile Grin Nevada test site

tellmeofthetime · 21/10/2015 23:46

Awful.
Just like the Denver I know with his sister Aspen.

jorahmormont · 22/10/2015 01:24

I love place names, particularly US places (I'm named after several locations in America Grin ) but Nevada is too far even for me. I like Aspen, Albany, Dakota, Phoenix, Brooklyn, Georgia and others... Nevada and Tennessee are just a little bit too place-y for my tastes.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/10/2015 01:43

Nope I can't be doing with Nevada either.

KoalaDownUnder · 22/10/2015 01:57

It's awful.

I know sisters called Rio and Capri. Just sayin'.

Nataleejah · 22/10/2015 08:44

Poor boy with such a name.
Made me think of a simpsons character Alaska Nebraska

FunkyPeacock · 22/10/2015 08:47

I don't like it but I've heard much worse!

Only1scoop · 22/10/2015 08:57

Awful

Remember a road trip through Nevada ....many mini brothels....very remote ones

I was fascinated Blush

AnonymousBird · 22/10/2015 09:15

It's better than Harlow.

I know one of those!

BastardGoDarkly · 22/10/2015 09:20

I know a family of phoenix (boy) Dakota (girl) and levity (girl) Confused

MamaLazarou · 22/10/2015 15:04

I like Nevada, am a big fan of American place names as names: Georgia, Dakota, Atlanta, all lovely.

minimalist000001 · 24/10/2015 17:20

Nev is cute

HopefulAnxiety · 24/10/2015 19:46

Bree Florence was a place first (though obv Firenze in Italian). Florence Nightingale and her sister Parthenope (really!) were named after their parents toured Italy.

I quite like American place names as names. Don't mind Nevada.

yeOldeTrout · 24/10/2015 19:52

Snowy is fine.

reuset · 25/10/2015 01:39

Parthenope was her middle name. She was Frances.

Snowy is fine Shock If you're an animal, or a mountain peak perhaps.

Pinklily1 · 01/11/2015 18:16

Its hideous. Sounds common and made up (as a name) to me

IoraRua · 01/11/2015 18:25

Too much like a stripper name for my tastes. Appropriate state to choose if you are a stripper though! Grin
