Rowan - For a girl??

Hello,

My OH and I are expecting a little girl and are really struggling with names. We have a top 10 but only 1 really sticks out.

How would you react meeting a little girl called Rowan? We both love the name but not sure how well it fits a girl?

It was on my list for Ds1 had he been a girl.

I don't really like it as a boys name but it's beautiful for a girl.

mrsschu · 16/09/2015 07:03

I don't like it at all, sounds incredibly bland on a boy or girl. It's one of the names MN loves though, so I could have guessed the reaction on here without even reading the post!

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/09/2015 07:44

I really like it. In real life I've only ever met one Rowan and she was a teenage girl. But i'm aware of a couple of male Rowan's in the public eye.

It's one of the few names touted as unisex which I think actually is.

fastdaytears · 16/09/2015 07:46

Oh I knew a gorgeous little Rowan years ago. She got "Ro" sometimes as an abbreviation but mostly Rowan. She suited her name and seemed to like it! I think it's really cute.

KaraokeQueenOfTheNorth · 16/09/2015 07:53

I love it for a girl

BathtimeFunkster · 16/09/2015 07:55

I'm afraid I think it's really downmarket on a girl.

Grin

Oh no, wait everybody - Bimble thinks it's "downmarket" to give this name to a girl.

Just like how downmarket it was of Morgan Le Fay's parents to call their daughter such a downmarket name back in Arthurian legend times.

They were such skangers, the Le Fays.

southeastastra · 16/09/2015 07:58

reminds me of wicker man, but i like it

fastdaytears · 16/09/2015 08:11

Ha the Rowan I knew was not downmarket. Unless I'm so downmarket I can't accurately assess whether a child is downmarket? Confused worried now!

jellypi3 · 16/09/2015 09:12

Thanks for the feedback everyone :) I do like it a lot!

I much prefer it for a girl although I don't like it at all iyswim.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/09/2015 09:40

I don't particularly like Morgan for a girl, I live in Wales it is very much a boys name here (not saying there aren't any Welsh girl Morgan's but there won't be very many).

Rowan is lovely though. I liked it enough to use for my daughter but thought it would be odd to do so as the teenage Rowan I know is the daughter of a friend of my husband.

BoskyCat · 16/09/2015 09:42

When I hear someone has called their DD Morgan, I don't think "downmarket", I think Errrrrrm have you read the story!!??? She was a nasty piece of work!

NorbertDentressangle · 16/09/2015 09:46

The only Rowans I know are male (children and one adult).

I wouldn't say it was purely a male name though as it sounds quite unisex to me.

BimbleBombleBee · 16/09/2015 13:28

Bathtime - you sound like an utter eejit. This is a baby name opinion board.

Marcipex · 19/09/2015 19:03

My dd is Rowan, she gets lots of compliments.
It's a pity Rowan Atkinson has a girls name, as he's quite well known, but all the Rowans I know personally are girls.

Three are Rowan Elizabeth.

HannahHobbins · 19/09/2015 19:14

It's lovely OP. Very pretty.

TinyMonkey · 22/09/2015 21:04

I was at primary school thirty odd years ago with a girl called Rowen (with an 'e'), I think it's lovely.

WildwestWind · 24/09/2015 19:57

love the name - prefer it spelt Rohan to Rowan.

AlohaMama · 24/09/2015 20:14

Lovely name, go for it.

FunkyPeacock · 24/09/2015 20:20

I think it's one of the few names that is truly unisex and sounds equally good on a boy or girl

FlyDragonfly1 · 25/09/2015 09:56

I know both a male and a female Rowan. It suits both of them, I like it on either gender.

Keeptrudging · 25/09/2015 10:02

Rowan is a lovely name. The one I know (close family) went to Cambridge, is high up in academia and is certainly not 'downmarket' Grin!

The Scottish pronunciation rhymes with 'cow' but it's also a lovely name here.

GrizzlebertGrumbledink · 25/09/2015 10:28

All Rowans I know are boys and I see it as a boys name personally. I went to school with a Rowanne though and think it makes a nice girls name

dementedma · 27/09/2015 15:49

Lovely name. I would pronounce it Row(as in cow) an, but I'm in Scotland.

Muskey · 27/09/2015 16:00

How about rowann but I do like rowan
