Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 11:17

So I think we are pretty set on Elliot for our baby girl due in a few month, but what do you think of a middle name

Elliot Josephine
Elliot Louise
Elliot Lucy
Any other pretty suggestions, she will probably be referred to as Ellie

Iris
Violet
Imogen
Emma (quite like the alliteration)
Amelia

Or if you were channeling your inner redneck you could use May and have your very own Ellie May.

BTW I love Elliot for a girl, great name choice.

MrsWooster · 15/09/2015 11:25

George mwahaha

BertrandRussell · 15/09/2015 11:28

Only call a girl Elliot if you would call a boy Alice.

Seriously - it's a boy's name.

CarmenMonoxide · 15/09/2015 11:30

OOh no don't call her Ellie if she's Elliot, there are a million Ellies and Elliot is a fab name.
Elliot Grace?
Elliiot Paige?

Burnet · 15/09/2015 11:31

I like Josephine Elliot, and Lucy Elliot.

fairyfeatures · 15/09/2015 11:32

Ooooh I really like Elliot for a girl - but please don't call her Ellie. I swear 99% of DC school is made up of Ellie's and with such a lovely name for a girl, don't shorten it to something not so lovely and unique.

And FWIW, I don't think it needs a middle name, if you need one, keep it short and 1/2 syllables.

Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 11:41

The name is like marmite, I feel like people think I'm calling her Dave! I think Elliot is very feminine and I wouldn't use it for a boy. I'm not the only person to use it as well it's becoming more popular as a girls name, just like Lesley and Ashley for boys.

I like Elliot Paige actually, can't use grace as a middle name in the family already, as are Mai, rose and faith.

And BTW I like George, Dylan and Andie for girls too! It's nice to have variety in the world!!

I love Elliott for a girl but DP said no :(

I'd personally have Elliott Rose or Elliott Meghan with our surname

Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 11:51

We can't have rose although I love it, already taken by a niece. However we both always loved Meghan so might throw that in the mix. Weirdly it's DH that is super set on Elliot I'm the one that was hesitant Smile

To me Elliot is a surname at best or a boy's name. If you put a girl's name as a middle name, people may think you have filled in a form the wrong way round, so if you use Elliott Mary, people could think the names have been transposed and call her Mary Elliot.

I have the reverse problem - my surname has become a popular first name for girls and people will call me by my surname. To me it sounds like some Victorian master calling their servant by their surname and it annoys me intensely, especially when they compound the problem by misspelling the name - grrr. I have no problem with variety but please be ware. it's not you who will have to bare the brunt of your choice.

Sophronia · 15/09/2015 11:53

Elliot Alice
Elliot Hannah
Elliot Jane
Elliot Sophie

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/09/2015 11:53

Elliott for a girl. I like it. I think with it predominantly being a boys name. I think you need s real feminine middle name
Some suggestions
I do love Elliot Paige
Elliot Marie
Elliot Beth
Elliot Sophia
Elliot Rose
Elliot Isobel
Elliott Lorraine

fairyfeatures · 15/09/2015 11:58

A vote for Elliot Grace or Elliot Paige

BikeRunSki · 15/09/2015 11:59

I was also going to say Elliot Alice

If you want to abbreviate use Lottie rather than Ellie.

Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 12:13

Ohh I like lottie, and Ellie belly and Ellie Lou.

I'd like to think she will love her name, it will be a little quirky and different but I know she won't be the only female elliot around either. As I know it's being used for girls.

Thanks for all the suggestions, love Elliot Sophia/Sophie , and Elliot Paige they are going on the list Smile

Elliot is used as a girl's name in the hit TV show Scrubs. I don't think it sounds any less feminine than, say, Eleanor or Harriet.

I like the sound of Elliot Louise and Elliot Rose in particular.

BertrandRussell · 15/09/2015 12:49

People will expect her to be a boy every single time. Which will be utterly, utterly tedious for her.

Why do people do things on purpose to make their children's lives more difficult than they need to be?

QforCucumber · 15/09/2015 12:53

I have a name used for both boy and girl - never really found it tedious, if anything more amusing when I've turned up at a meeting and not been what was expected - or when someone who clearly doesn't know me rings work or home asking for Mr Q Cucumber.

I love Elliott and honestly find it a bit soft and feminine so personally wouldn't have used it on a boy, it was one of our shortlist for the baby I'm pregnant with but DP has a preference to our other chosen name - Robyn, which I guess is also a boys or girls name too.

SavoyCabbage · 15/09/2015 12:55

Isn't Elliot on Scrubs called Elliot because her dad only wanted boys?

Minimaus · 15/09/2015 12:57

There are many names that are unisex and I don't think that's necessarily a disadvantage, it might even be an advantage sometimes e.g. when applying for a job, it avoids gender discrimination etc. Names like Alex, Sam and Chris are so widely used by both men and women for example.

In terms of middle names how about Elliot Jane or Elliot May?

MerryMarigold · 15/09/2015 13:10

I think it sounds best with a one syllable name. In my dc school, there are Ellie's galore. I don't know what they're short for! I think Elliot is quite strong and different, Ellie is the opposite - girly and common, so you really need to decide which will be her name, used in school and by friends.

Tbh, middle names are of limited value and I think many of these would do fine, if you want to soften the Elliot with something more feminine. Not fond of Paige.

Elliot Day - I kind of like it, for the reason that it won't sound like a surname, first name mix up - they're both unusual.

Elliot Emmanuelle

Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 14:33

Yes SavoyCabbage I know that about Elliot from scrubs, but did you know there was something like 770 female Elliot's born last year?! I don't care if it's traditionally a boys name, like I said in my opinion it's very feminine sounding and it's my choice as a parent.

Anyways people name their children all sorts these days. I like Elliot, and I think she will love it too. Living in london I don't think her name will ever be an issue Smile

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 15/09/2015 15:34

So you don't think people will assume she is a boy? Because you live in London? Hmm

BikeRunSki · 15/09/2015 16:41

I wouldn't assume an Elliot was a boy. Or Morgan, Mackenzie or Robin (but Robyn I'd assume was a girl). I live in Yorkshire if it matters.

Bumpingalong84 · 15/09/2015 16:44

That's not what I meant, that because we live in London she will come across people with all sorts of names from all different cultures. I don't care if people assume she is a boy by her name, when they meet her they will just be like ohh cool. I'm not asking about people's opinions on my name choice anyway, I was asking what people's ideas on middle name!
