Names that go with Margaret?

Have been trying (and failing!) to come up with a girl's name that both I and Mr. Pingu agree upon. My gran (who I was very close to) was named Margaret and if we had a girl I'd like to use that as a middle name (and we've agreed on that, at least). But struggling a bit with a first name.

I like Emily but given that it was the most popular girl's name in Scotland last year am a bit reluctant - ideally wouldn't want her to be one of several girls with the same name in her P1 class. Eilidh is nice (and also Scottish) and I think it goes pretty well with Margaret, but Mr. Pingu's not convinced.
Any suggestions? Ideally something relatively traditional and if possible something Scottish. Nothing too out-there as she would be going to a state school in Glasgow so for example 'Ophelia' won't work!

Does it have to "go" with Margaret? How often will you say the names together?

(Sorry, not helpful)

Princerocks · 11/09/2015 00:02

I'd go first name Margaret. It's lovely and feminine and strong. Can be shortened to Maggie if she wants.

GlasgowPingu · 11/09/2015 00:05

That's actually a fair point - almost never, would be my guess. So I suppose it doesn't have to 'go' with Margaret but something that doesn't sound actively odd with Margaret (for example, a very modern name) would be a bonus.

Princerocks - I'm not sure Mr. Pingu would allow a first name of Margaret especially if it gets shortened to Maggie - he wasn't Mrs. Thatcher's biggest fan, shall we say...

You've just ruined that name for me. I hadn't formed the association.

Fumnudge · 11/09/2015 00:27

Josie/Josephine? (No Scottish connections AFAIK though, sorry)

Mel0Drama · 11/09/2015 00:36

Abigail

dementedDementor · 11/09/2015 00:49

I was going to suggest Margaret Anne but have seen you don't want Margaret as first name so how about Annabel Margaret?

Capewrath · 11/09/2015 01:01

My female family names ( yes, Scots as you might guess)include

Janet/ Jean
Lesley
Elspeth/Elisabeth/Betty/Lily
Isobel / Ishbel
Alison/ Alisoun
Mary/Mamie
Roberta/Bertha
Euphemia/Phemie ( usually pronounced FAmie)

Don't forget the quaint habit if calling a daughter after the father with Ina on the end. thomasina is normal, but donaldina, angusina, pinguina. Child normally gets called Ina.

Catriona Margaret v pretty.

My middle name's Margaret - first name Sarah. I think it goes! Grin

Pingu is a Scottish name? I thought it was made up for that annoying penguin. This thread's been educational.

Ipushedmygrannyaffabus · 11/09/2015 04:24

I think most names go with Margaret as a middle name. What about using Megan as her first name instead? Or..

Eleanor Margaret
Chloe Margaret
Sophie Margaret
Eliza Margaret
Naomi Margaret

Ipushedmygrannyaffabus · 11/09/2015 04:26

Ps - I really like your suggestion of Eilidh Margaret - it's both cute AND classic

Catnuzzle · 11/09/2015 06:53

Definitely Eleanor Margaret.

DD1 was born just before my beautiful lovely wonderful Grandma died, we used Margaret as her middle name to honour her, and Eleanor goes very well with it.

Meant we were a bit stumped for a middle name with such meaning for DD2 though, went for SIL first name in the end which I wasn't keen on, but it beat DH's grans name!

janethegirl2 · 11/09/2015 06:59

Jane Margaret?
Kirsty Margaret?
Helen Margaret
Ayla Margaret?

GlasgowPingu · 11/09/2015 08:33

Sophie and Lily are both no-nos for the same reason as Emily - which is a shame as I really like both of them.

Josephine whilst lovely might be a bit of a mouthful for a small person (though we could as suggested call her Josie or maybe even Jo?) and I think Annabel possibly fails for the same reason.

Abigail, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Sarah (or Sara) and Kirsty are all great suggestions though so thank you very much :)

Re. the Scottish tradition of naming girls after the dad + ina, I have met both a Hughina and a Andrewina. How do you look at a small person and decide 'I know, let's call her Hughina'?!?

The first name that came to me was Helena which sounds lovely with Margaret. It also sounds Scottish to me although I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm thinking of Helena Kennedy.
