The name Sienna. Did you know that..

As well as being an Italian city, it is also a colour - reddish/orangey brown.

The reason I ask is because we've had a U-turn with names and now love Sienna again but our surname is Brown. I've purposely stayed away from colour names (eg Scarlett) for that reason but do you think people actually know Sienna is a colour?

Interested to know your thoughts as you've all been so helpful with my previous posts. I'm now 8 days overdue - eek!!! Confused

Yes, I did know that. I'd avoid Sienna Brown. Sounds like a description of brown tbh.

reuset · 06/09/2015 23:55

Yes I would think of the artists colour. I'm not just saying that, I've said it before in one of my old posts.

Whether that makes it a name to avoid, when combined with surname, is up to you. It's not too bad I think

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/09/2015 23:56

Burnt Sienna, loved my paintbox. The city is Siena though.

BonzoDooDah · 06/09/2015 23:56

Yup - fairly well know that it's a colour. Sorry. I'd avoid that one. It is probably named after the city as the houses are all that colour.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 06/09/2015 23:57

DD loved the Cadson family books; all the kids are named after paint colours.

StormCoat · 06/09/2015 23:57

Yes, Burnt Sienna is well known. The Tuscan city is Siena, rather than Sienna, though.

Ftumch · 06/09/2015 23:58

Yes, I think most people know sienna is a colour. But I don't think Sienna Brown sounds bad.

StormCoat · 06/09/2015 23:58

X-post with Tonkly.

StormCoat · 06/09/2015 23:58

Tinkly. Grr.

UrbaneFox · 07/09/2015 00:06

yeh, at school brown paint was called burnt sienna, so, to me when it emerged as a name, it reminded me of the musty art room

Burnet · 07/09/2015 00:07

Sienna Brown sounds silly.

What about Hazel? No no I jest.

UrbaneFox · 07/09/2015 00:08

No, wouldn't put sienna with sur name brown. Unless there's another sur name in the middle

Sienna Davis Brown - ok

Minniebrown · 07/09/2015 00:09

Thanks ladies, such a shame but glad I found this out now. There are so many lovely names I can't use for various reasons!

Back to Zara then I guess. I'm just not in love with the name but maybe I will be once she arrives!

It makes it more interesting. Or maybe I'm just in a 'devil may care' mood as I'm usually very sensible Grin

Lj8893 · 07/09/2015 00:13

Sounds like a garden fence paint job. Sorry.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 07/09/2015 00:15

I agree, it's a well known colour and, for that reason doesn't go so well with Brown as a name.

If it's any consolation though, little Sienna's are absolutely everywhere here at the moment. Your DD is far more likely to be the only Zara in her class than the only Sienna I would think.

I know at 18 year old Rosie Brown. Her name has always sounded slightly odd to me too Smile.

ShadowLine · 07/09/2015 00:33

Yes, I knew it was a colour. I didn't realise it was an Italian city though.

DontStopBelievin · 07/09/2015 00:39

Yup, Sienna is definitely a colour. I'm sure burnt sienna was in my Crayola crayons packs when I was younger!

YonicScrewdriver · 07/09/2015 01:06

Same - coloured pencils.

Let's try some alternatives - Serena? Savannah? Cara? Claudia?

toastedbeagle · 07/09/2015 01:19

Yup Burnt Sienna is definitely a crayola crayon. We considered Siena for our DD, as it was the first place we went on holiday together.

Zort · 07/09/2015 02:16

How about Vienna? If my surname was Briwn I'd call my dd Velvet.

TeiTetua · 07/09/2015 02:35

Please not Sienna. It sounds as though the parents can't spell Siena, Vienna or senna.

Siennasun · 07/09/2015 19:59

^ no it doesn't, its Sienna the colour, not Siena the city. Vienna and Senna are not names.
Sienna Brown is essentially browny brown. There's so many nice girls names, Don't choose Zara if you don't love it.

Scarletforya · 07/09/2015 20:02

I knew it as a color before anything else. Burnt sienna.
