Nickname - can Freya be shortened or is it impossible?

I like the idea of a name that can't be made into a nickname. I think Freya is pretty and fits the bill - what do you think? :)

Sorry, my twins have a friend called Freya, everyone calls her Frey or Yaya (pronounced Yaayaa).

Naicecuppatea · 30/08/2015 18:32

We call our little Freya Frey, as do her friends.

PurpleSkyatthewateringhole · 30/08/2015 18:33

Any name can be shortened. School friends find a way, even if it's just using an initial instead.

bloodyteenagers · 30/08/2015 18:35

I know a Freya who is called Ray

jinglymum · 30/08/2015 18:35

I know a Freya that gets called Fee.

Sirzy · 30/08/2015 18:36

I picked Harry for the same reason. When he was a few weeks old my uncle called him "H"

People will always find a way to shorten/change a name!

RachelZoe · 30/08/2015 18:47

Sirzy

I also have a Harry, he is now "Haz", there is truly no name that can't be shortened.

Puffinsharon · 30/08/2015 18:51

DD's friend gets called 'Freeze' from Freya. She thinks it's great because of Frozen, it's certainly better than her brother Bjorn, who gets called BJ by all his little 8yr old pals.

Actually amazed!! Grin

Although I quite like Ray... Or should it be Rey?!

There are very few names that can't be shortened. Sorry but Freya isn't one of them
Variation Frey

Clawdy · 30/08/2015 21:45

Anne can't be shortened!

BeetlebumShesAGun · 30/08/2015 21:46

I knew a Freya who's nickname was Fred!

GuessWhoIamToday · 30/08/2015 21:57

My mum and dad wanted names for DSis and I which could not be shortened. They called my sister Paula - and pretty much that worked. Occasionally called "P" but for 40-odd years she has just been Paula.

Me though, they called Joanne. I have been Jo my entire life. How the fuck they thought they had a name that could not be shortened I am not sure Grin

currytoohot · 30/08/2015 22:30

A friend named her baby Dawn a few years ago thinking it couldn't be shortened. Dawn gets called D by her husband much to my friends annoyance!

quangotango · 30/08/2015 22:33

there are no names that can't or won't be shortened and if you try and be clever and pick a single syllable name it will get lengthened or turned into a letter.

Thatrabbittrickedme · 30/08/2015 22:37

Yep, I have a one syllable name and many people call me 'G'. Shortening is like water running downhill. It will happen, you can't stop it.

Grin at BJ!!!

Squooshed · 30/08/2015 22:38

Names that can't be shortened tend to be lengthened!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 30/08/2015 23:24

The only ones I can think of are...

Jay
Guy
Paul
Mark
Luke
John
George
Che/shay

Kay
Kate
Elle
Dee
Ann(e)
Jane

quangotango · 31/08/2015 10:49

boys my son knows with some of those names:

Jay - JJ
Luke - Lukie (or pookie)
John(athan) - Jon-boy
George - G

they will nickname any name!

Stillyummy · 31/08/2015 11:48

Just because a name can't be shortened, doesn't mean you escape the nick name. I am over 30 and still known as cat by many of my friends. It is nothing to do with my name.

Lunastarfish · 31/08/2015 11:50

What about Faye instead?

Jw35 · 31/08/2015 11:50

I've got an Eve, she gets called Evie! You can't win Grin

noiwontstoptalking · 31/08/2015 11:55

My parents have us names they thought couldn't be shortened. It took about 30 seconds after we started school.

Names that can't be shortened eg 'Anne' as mentioned by a pp will be lengthened (Annie or Anya or Anna Banana).

You can only control what you call your child. You can't control what others will call them or what they'll choose to call themselves.

SixtyFootDoll · 31/08/2015 12:06

My nieces friends call her Frezzle

Thoughtfulduck · 31/08/2015 15:04

I know a Freya with a nickname of From. I guess it comes from Fromage-Freya... But none of us see anything unusual with saying "Hey From/Frommie!"

Names will always be shortened/lengthened, I think it's all to do with what you call them as a parent and then eventually what they prefer. Freya doesn't have obvious shortenings though :)
