Primrose - nearly decided!

I started a thread about Primrose, Daphne and Bluebell and most of you preferred Primrose.
So.... hit me with everything you think about this name.
Would it be easy to live with at school? Is it too twee? What's your favourite nickname?
Do you know any that like their names?

I'm actually quite a reserved person and not one to go for a 'whacky' name, I just really love it. Equally, I don't want to lumber my dd with a limiting name so want honest opinions, I can take it!

I really like it. She won't stand out in class these days, it's not like unusual names are unusual... Might have been different when I was at primary school but that was, erm, a while ago.

Daphnedolittle · 17/08/2015 21:45

Thanks lost - hadn't thought of just using Twee, helpful.

Quim? Never even heard of that!

Penfold - what does your DM use?

I like Posy as a short form of Primrose. If you like floral names there are a multitude.

Jasmine
Poppy
Hyacinth
Rose
Daphne
Daisy
Rosemary

Never come across a Lupin, Aubretia, Tulip, Lobelia, Camelia or Fresia but who's to say I won't.

woodleydoodle · 17/08/2015 22:20

Twee and 'prissy' I really don't like it. I'd like it as a name for a sheep or goat, but not a person.

Spiegelei · 17/08/2015 22:41

Posy/Posey isn't short for Primrose, it's just a small bunch or bouquet of flowers.

And please don't - Primrose is a fussy, middle aged sort of flower name. I'd have been sending off the deed poll form at the earliest opportunity if I'd been given that name.

And... Primrose Shipman. The most famous Primrose of modern times.

fabuLou · 17/08/2015 22:46

I love Tulip

Rivercam · 17/08/2015 22:48

Love Primrose. I'm surprised that's not more Primroses around with the Darlin' Bud of May a few years ago ( okay, several years ago). To me, it's no different to naming someone Poppy, Jasmine or Daisy, all popular flower names.

Nicknames could include Posy or Rose.

If you love it, use it. You'll know instantly when she is born whether she is a Primrose or not.

I think it's unusual but not wacky. Ie. Everyone will be able to spell it.

LOve it.

Daphnedolittle · 17/08/2015 22:48

I don't see Primrose as middle aged, maybe the hunger games has made it seem modern again.

Thanks for the positive post rivercam Smile

Only perhaps if you watch the Hunger Games. I never have and don't know anyone who has.

If you love it use it, that's your prerogative as a parent. But you posted on here asking for opinions.

Daphnedolittle · 17/08/2015 22:58

Yes and I'm listening to all opinions, don't think I ever suggested I wasn't.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/08/2015 22:59

Really silly and twee.

Marcipex · 17/08/2015 23:04

I like it and Posy is lovely.
I wouldn't put an E in it though.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 17/08/2015 23:05

I'm sorry, but I don't like it - and 'prim' is a terrible nickname that will come out.

Posy isn't a shortening for Primrose, so I don't think you'd be able to expect other people to use it.

Daphnedolittle · 17/08/2015 23:11

It's definitely a love/hate name that's for sure. Thanks for all the comments, it's interesting to hear different opinions.

MamaLazarou · 18/08/2015 12:18

I can't think of a single nice thing to say about Primrose, I'm afraid.

Primrose Shipman
Mimsy little flowers
'Prim'

It's truly awful.

StevieJo · 18/08/2015 12:22

Also remember that Primrose is Katniss's little sister in the hunger games trilogy. With the last movie coming out it may become more popular. I like just Rose as a nickname

maras2 · 18/08/2015 12:29

My eldest DGD has a name with all of those flowery names - Meadow.

RedToothBrush · 18/08/2015 12:50
  1. Do you love it?
  2. Is it unusual but not out there to the point that you go 'eh?'
  3. Is it easy to spell?
  4. Is it free from unfortunate associations or rude rhymes/slang?
  5. Is it relatively 'on trend'?

If you can answer yes to all of the above, then its probably not a bad name choice.

Twee is something some people like but others don't. Its a matter of taste and not everyone likes the same names otherwise we'd all be called the same things.

Primrose is on trend as flower names are everywhere. If you are introverted this won't stand out too much in a field of Lilys, Poppys, Iris, Roses, Daisies and Violets.

Have the courage of your convictions.

MamaLazarou · 18/08/2015 15:25

That's lovely, maras2

CakeRattleandRoll · 18/08/2015 16:19

It would be too twee for me to use, but that's just personal opinion. I don't like the 'prim' part. It does have some good points though - easy to spell/pronounce and primroses are lovely flowers.

Noodle1234 · 18/08/2015 18:13

Ok so maybe Primrose is a marmite name, or more likely it's a grower and once people get used to it irl their opinions will change. Also worth bearing in mind, what sort of names do the naysayers like? Perhaps you'd wrinkle your nose at their taste in names too? So following that logic through, some negative comments are a good thing! :)

I like Primrose. I know a 2 year old Primrose and when her family refer to her as Prim it is just so lovely and fun. I think Posey would work equally well as a nn, and why not? A lot of people's nicknames have no relation to their name whatsoever.

I think Primrose is quietly on trend. The Hunger Games isn't a bad association at all. The current generation won't bat an eyelid at Primrose, either as it fits right in with other flower names and emerging quirky names. I don't think there'll be any rush for deed poll because of the horror of being named Primrose!

Seriously, go for it, you know you want to.

Daphnedolittle · 18/08/2015 20:32

Thanks for taking the time to reply, those responses were really helpful. I was kind of hoping it would be more popular than it is when I saw the latest name stats. It's in the 400's so more unusual than I expected.

In terms of the nickname Prim... I actually really like that as a nickname. I think that's one of the reasons the name appeals so much. I love Rose, Rosy, Prim, Posy and the chances are she will choose one of those.

It's good to hear most of you don't think it will stand out much amongst her generation. I don't have children or neices/nephews so I'm not amongst them at all. That's one of the reasons I find asking opinions so helpful, as I don't like asking in real life.

I started considering Josephine (nn Posy) to give more options but it's really not my style of name, and I would always be hoping people didn't call her Jo which I'm not keen on at all.
