Jude

I have an almost 5 yr old DD called Imogen Elizabeth. Expecting a baby boy in September and so far the only name I like is Jude. Perhaps Jude Alexander. Made the mistake of telling people it was a possibility, especially family and while a handful have said 'love it' others have said 'that's a girls name' or 'do you want him to be bullied?'

Do you think id be burdening him with a name that will attract negative attention? Or if you just don't like it, is it because you don't particularly care for the name?

Honest options very welcome!

"Never read, or heard of Jude the Obscure, guessing half of the population are similar."

Wow- really? Sad

clarabellski · 04/08/2015 11:42

I know of 2 people who have gone with Jude for a boy in past year (one a cousin and the other a family friend) so anecdotally it seems fine for a boy?

starkers1 · 04/08/2015 11:54

no BertrandRussell we read other Thomas Hardy novels at school, though, sorry this is so upsetting for you Confused

reuset · 04/08/2015 12:08

I didn't 'do' Thomas Hardy until college, The Trumpet Major. One of my least favourite I think, also Hand of Ethelberta (I think it was called - I should have started a thread with that name Grin). I read them all myself because we had them at home.

You don't need school to introduce you to classic books and I too would be sad so many have not read

marinacortina · 04/08/2015 12:16

I would expect most people to be familiar with the title at least, if only from seeing it on the library shelves, or in a bookshop. There have also been film and TV dramatisations.

BertrandRussell · 04/08/2015 12:18

I do find cheerful anti intellectualism upsetting, yes.......

UrethraFranklin1 · 04/08/2015 12:43

There was a film with (I think) Kate Winslet and Christopher Ecclestone, its hardly esoteric highbrow stuff!

reuset · 04/08/2015 12:57

If you take it at face value, perhaps. The themes are central and very important and thought provoking, but it is better understood read than watched.

starkers1 · 04/08/2015 14:49

I also find snobbery and adopting a patronising tone because we have not all read the exact same classic literature also upsetting...

BertrandRussell · 04/08/2015 15:17

Not having read- absolutely fine.

Not having heard of- not so fine.

whatarethose · 04/08/2015 18:41

Why is it not fine to not have heard?

Ward3 · 05/08/2015 05:48

Really really love Jude!

Sallystyle · 05/08/2015 05:56

I wanted to call ds3 Jude.

Then my friend named her son Jude and I stupidly didn't feel right using it as well. I regret that really.

Sallystyle · 05/08/2015 05:59

I haven't heard of Jude The Obscure.

Bert can post another sad face now.

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 05/08/2015 07:50

I don't understand the issue with people having not heard of Jude the Obscure.

I have, but choose a different area of literature, or worse (for me) a scientific theory or a famous artist or painting and I probably wouldn't have a clue.

Horses for courses and all that, doesn't make one person better than another. Confused

MamaLazarou · 05/08/2015 08:07

"cheerful anti-intellectualism" Grin

Glastokitty · 05/08/2015 08:12

I've got a Jude. It's a great name, people are always telling me how much they like it. He does hate Hey Jude though.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 05/08/2015 20:01

That lamb is gorgeous.

Commander · 05/08/2015 22:02

My DS aged 4 is called Jude. We only know one more who is 12. DS loves his name and I still think it's the best name in the world Smile

morepleasegromit · 05/08/2015 22:12

Beautiful choice especially with Alexander. Go for it!

Doublebubblebubble · 06/08/2015 13:03

Love it x
