Jude

I have an almost 5 yr old DD called Imogen Elizabeth. Expecting a baby boy in September and so far the only name I like is Jude. Perhaps Jude Alexander. Made the mistake of telling people it was a possibility, especially family and while a handful have said 'love it' others have said 'that's a girls name' or 'do you want him to be bullied?'

Do you think id be burdening him with a name that will attract negative attention? Or if you just don't like it, is it because you don't particularly care for the name?

Honest options very welcome!

Gorgeous and some great associations such Jude Law and of course the song "Hey Jude."

happymummyone · 03/08/2015 18:08

Perhaps I should read this book?!

Love the name Jude.

RiverTam · 03/08/2015 18:12

Angel Clare was a sanctimonious twunt.

Jude is a lovely name but I've never read the book so don't know any connections.

MehsMum · 03/08/2015 18:12

It's absolutely a boy's name. I know one and he is very cool.

CordeliaFoxx · 03/08/2015 18:12

Love it, it was River Phoenix's Middle name, named after the Beetles song. I had a dog called Jude many years ago.

Happymummyone Jude´s a good book, but quite harrowing. If you haven´t read it already, I recommend Thomas Hardy´s, "Far From The Madding Crowd"; it´s my favourite of his novels and there´s also a cracking film adaptation with Julie Christie as the badass main character.

reuset · 03/08/2015 18:21

Yes, you should read it, Happy! One of my favourite Hardy books, very thought provoking, if utterly bleak. But, ah, poor Jude!

ch1134 · 03/08/2015 18:33

I love it for a girl.

Sansarya · 03/08/2015 18:38

Isn't Jude the patron saint of lost causes? And of course there's Jude the Obscure, which may be one of the most depressing books I've ever read.

ejecoms · 03/08/2015 20:37

Doesn't he kill all his siblings and leave a note saying 'killed because we were too meny'? I cried so much!

Happy36 · 03/08/2015 20:37

SPOILER ALERT!

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 03/08/2015 20:41

Great name. I know a couple of boy Judes and noone ever thinks they are girls or bullies them.

Madbengalmum · 03/08/2015 20:45

Girls name and really dislike it for a boy.
Trying far too hard

ejecoms · 03/08/2015 20:46

Sorry

marinacortina · 03/08/2015 20:52

I don't like it for three reasons.

Because of the dreadful associations with Jude The Obscure.

The reason St Jude is the patron saint of lost causes is that people used to confuse him with the traitor Judas Iscariot, so he became a last resort.

It's a bit on the feminine side because of the similarity to Judith/Judy.

reuset · 03/08/2015 21:31

Jude doesn't, no, ej! But that's a terrible scene, the discovery.

We don't really need spoiler alerts for C19 classics, but I agree and don't want to spoil it for Happy and anybody else who's about to read after this thread Grin Though I can't say which part I reflect most on now, but will say it is connected to the beginning and ambitions (too cryptic!)

Heidi122 · 03/08/2015 21:46

Love it! Am in the process of trying to convince my husband to call our next baby due in 7 months Jude!!!

sweetpeame · 04/08/2015 07:43

Still enjoying the obscure comments Smile. That's the first thing that springs to my mind also. I also think it's an incredibly ugly name for a boy or a girl, it just sounds awful IMO. I know a female Jude who is 60+ and a male Jude who is 40+, no little kids although if MN is to be believed they are springing up left, right and centre!

Notso · 04/08/2015 07:50

I love it. It was my choice for DS1 but DH 'won' because he was convinced I wanted Jude because of Jude Law.

StrawberryMojito · 04/08/2015 07:51

There is a Jude at my DSs nursery, he is a lovely, well behaved, happy little boy. I really like the name.

FlyDragonfly1 · 04/08/2015 09:31

I'm biased here, but I adore it.
DS1 is Jude Charles - he loves his name and most people have assumed he's male when they see just his first name written down.
He gets the song 'Hey Jude' sang at him quite a lot but that's about the only problem. Smile

squoosh · 04/08/2015 10:17

Absolutely love the name Jude.

What does 'trying far too hard' actually mean? Trying too hard to find a name you love? It's not as though Jude is particularly unusual or underused or screams 'look at me and my knack for uncovering ancient and forgotten names'.

squoosh · 04/08/2015 10:24

In fact, my first hand reared lamb was called Jude

starkers1 · 04/08/2015 10:46

Never read, or heard of Jude the Obscure, guessing half of the population are similar. Go for it. I think of Hey Jude and Jude Law, no bad things IMO.
