  • Simple, easy to spell and pronounce, BUT very underused.
  • Names that don't immediately give away your age, class, nationality.

  • Not too long and frilly but pretty and feminine

  • Not a nickname

So far I like

Nina
Sadie
Tessa
Juliet
Saffron
Greta
Romilly
Tamsin
Bryony
June
Robyn
India

I can find problems with all of them though, any other suggestions?

I think you've already found your name - Tessa!

mysteryfairy · 04/08/2015 06:43

Does not a nickname mean not a diminutive?

Asking because Tessa is originally short for Theresa. I know quite a few Tessas - perhaps due to Roman Catholic background - and they are all baptised Theresa or Marie Therese.

I think Sadie is traditionally a pet name for Sarah.

zippyswife · 04/08/2015 07:27

Your criteria is like mine. And I love lots of these suggestions. My shortlist so far is-
Anna
Cora
Corinne
Greta
Tess
Sarah
Rebekah
Rachel
Bridget
Elizabeth
Jude

Mira
Ingrid
Lotte
Melanie
Esther
Lara

What about Fiona? It's a lovely classic name not short for anything not frilly or silly, and there won't be many baby Fiona's about

happymummyone · 05/08/2015 11:07

Imogen! Biased, it's my daughters name.

Sadie and Tessa are both diminutives but pretty names

From earlier suggestions Ada and Cora are lovely

kaftanlady · 05/08/2015 16:19

Sadie's not new as a given name. My gran was called Sadie. She'd be pushing 100 if she was still here.

HelenaJohannsen · 05/08/2015 17:44

Isla rolls off the tongue beautifully
Florence
Isabella
Tessa
Lila
Ivy
Nova
Lilleigh
Anastasia (Nastya or Nastia for short, or Ana)
Faith (This was a close contender for me but I chose Flora instead, I think first name Faith Ingrid can be very feminine but different)
Flora (As opposed to Florence)
Serena
Lara
Minnie
Mae
I hope this helps :)

marinacortina · 05/08/2015 18:38

Nastya or Nastia for short

Seriously? Hmm

HelenaJohannsen · 05/08/2015 19:37

Marinacortina That's the Russian nicknames, and I have some Russian roots, so my Grandmother is called Nastya for short within the family. I know they sound a little funny but they're nice sounding in the native accent :) But I know it might be a little strange to some people.

SirPercyPilkington · 05/08/2015 19:41

Jean or Joan
I swear these names are coming back

NoSnotAllowed · 05/08/2015 19:42

Ayla

zippyswife · 05/08/2015 19:46

Percy I like Joan! Good solid strong. Hmmm... Adds to list

marinacortina · 05/08/2015 20:16

Helena Yes, I realise they are Russian nns, but they would not be pleasant for a child in an Anglophone country.

dingdongditch · 05/08/2015 20:18

Lena or Elena

Quietattheback · 05/08/2015 20:19

Lila
Jenna
Safiya

HelenaJohannsen · 05/08/2015 20:35

marina I suppose its a matter of personal opinion and taste. Some people might like it. But each to their own.

As previous posters have said, Sadie and Tessa are nicknames, or at least short forms of longer names.
So are Greta (Margaret) and Nina (for all sorts of names ending in 'ina'; it's also rather generic, and means 'little girl')

AltoPalo · 09/08/2015 07:34

I love Tessa, Nina and Greta from your shortlist.

Other ideas:
Erin
Thea
Zoe
Juno
Tilda
Rosa
Megan
