  • Simple, easy to spell and pronounce, BUT very underused.
  • Names that don't immediately give away your age, class, nationality.

  • Not too long and frilly but pretty and feminine

  • Not a nickname

So far I like

Nina
Sadie
Tessa
Juliet
Saffron
Greta
Romilly
Tamsin
Bryony
June
Robyn
India

I can find problems with all of them though, any other suggestions?

Sarah, it's a rare child born today that will be named that.

Ditto Janet, Sonia, Julie, Angela, Sophia, Jacqueline, Anne, Alexandra, Allegra, Cynthia, Clarissa, Stephanie, Paula, Louise, Pamela, Suzanne, Susannah, Wendy, Christine, Joanne, Sandra, Dana, Jocelyn, Josephine, Rhea, Amanda, Erica, Micaela, Michelle, Alison, Katrina, Catherine (they are all Caitlin instead).

I don't know what you rate as frilly, though, or how a name gives away nationality.

Oh, you have a really lovely shortlist. Absolutely love Sadie, Saffron and Juliet. Really like Robyn, Bryony, Romilly and India too.

Sorry for any repeats:

You have a similar remit and short list to me - I love India but have a Leo and am a bit worried that they don't really work together. Not that this should really be a consideration but you know what I mean... (I am only 7 weeks pregnant so not counting my chickens though and obviously don't know if it is a girl! But am mulling to keep my mind off things and also find girls names much harder than boys).

People have mentioned these but others I like with this remit include

Carys (although obviously this is very Welsh. I have ruled this out as our surname is also one of those ones that people sometimes mispronounce although it is actually quite simple so don't want to risk consigning any theoretical child to having to spell out/ pronounce both first name and surname!)
Cara
Anya
Kirsty
Tara

I actually really like Olivia too but am concerned that it's a little too popular.

ps I also like Nina and Romilly from your list. What are your concerns with them?

dotdotdotmustdash · 04/08/2015 02:55

I think Tessa from your original list fits the bill perfectly. I don't think I've ever met a Tessa of any age. It's simple, feminine and won't be mis-spelled.
