Bob is quite old-fashioned as a nn, so less likely to be used. Rob is the usual shortening these days, although I know two or three (various ages) who are always called Robert in full.

afink · 25/07/2015 13:46

Lovely classic name that is underused these days.

YouFargingIceHole · 25/07/2015 15:20

A good name. Not trendy, not out of fashion, just good.

Neednewflowers · 25/07/2015 16:15

Good solid name.

RiverTam · 25/07/2015 16:19

Wellllllll, Bob Grin

It's alright. Inoffensive. Lots of nns. I can't imagine swinging from the lampshades over it, though.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 25/07/2015 16:20

Loathe it sorry... I just think the -bert part is a really ugly sound.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/07/2015 16:29

Excellent name. One of the nice things about having a classic name is that you share it with lots of outstanding people: Bob Dylan, Robin Williams, Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Robert the Bruce, Robert Browning, Robert Mitchum, Robert Plant, Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Robert Louis Stevenson, Bob Hoskins, Robert Burns, Robert Hooke, Robert Kennedy, Bob the Builder.

CPtart · 25/07/2015 17:16

I know a couple of Roberts aged 12. Rather dull IMO.

florascotia · 25/07/2015 18:15

Great. Classic, simple, strong and (above all) dignified.

If Scottish or (perhaps) Northern then there are also short forms Rab and Rabbie.

Wishful80sMontage · 25/07/2015 18:16

I love it with Bobby as nn but oh's dad (who he doesn't get on with) is called that so it's out

Yarp · 25/07/2015 19:57

It's a good solid name, with nice abbreviations. Not exciting, but really safe. And I think safe is OK.

In a similar vein, I like:

John
David
Patrick
Michael

Yarp · 25/07/2015 19:58

Rob and Robbie are nice nicknames, if you don't like Bob

Duck90 · 25/07/2015 20:46

I like it. Very versatile.

TheNewStatesman · 25/07/2015 22:03

It's a nice, strong name, and not overused at the mo.

Most Roberts I know are Rob or just Robert.

iamabear · 25/07/2015 22:43

I would use it as a middle name due to family connections, but wouldn't use it as a first name personally as not keen on any of the nicknames.

bunny85 · 25/07/2015 22:57

Thanks everyone!

Yarp, thank you, good suggestions, I like David but OH is not keen. He's really difficult to please! Grin

My son is Robert. His mates call him Rob, we call him Robs, his aunt calls him Robsie Roo Ra and his sister Roobertroo. It's a name that won't date him. I dislike trendy names so it's perfect.

knackeredknees44 · 25/07/2015 23:16

I have a Bob - never dreamt when we chose Robert that he would be known as Bob, just evolved from time from the nickname Bobrobert. Now his initial on cricket selection sheets is 'B'. No regrets, he actually hates Rob as a shortened name!

Sunshineandwaves · 25/07/2015 23:35

Love it. Classic, not overused and won't date.

blowinahoolie · 26/07/2015 18:48

I know a baby Robert and he really suits his name. It's a solid name and isn't faddy like many names out there just now.

EmmaWoodlouse · 27/07/2015 20:53

I really like it, and I like Rob and Robbie but not so much Bob or Bobby (but I don't think anyone under the age of 60 would get called those anyway, unless they specially asked to be).

One of the things I like about it is that there's only one way to spell it!

hawkmcqueen · 27/07/2015 21:06

I love Robbie, don't care for Robert though...

ThisNameIsBetterThanMyRealOne · 27/07/2015 21:07

Good strong name!

squareheadcut · 27/07/2015 22:40

I think it is way too common

squareheadcut · 27/07/2015 22:41

And also pretty boring tbh
