Thoughts on Jonty?

Heard a little boy called this today, and I really like it, dp's dad was called john, but as my ex husbands name is Jonathan we ruled the name out straight away, so thought this would be nice as still has dp's name in it. Only thing putting me off is whether of not the name will be shortened to Jon which I'm not keen on x

I think it's very sweet but not sure how it would suit a grown man. And I do think it's a bit "Time Nicebutdim".

Sophronia · 22/07/2015 15:30

It's usually a (quite 'posh') nickname for Jonathan, I've never seen it used as a full first name before. I'm not keen, although I do like John/Johnny and Jonathan.

Floggingmolly · 22/07/2015 15:33

It's a real Hoora Henry sort of name.

Notso · 22/07/2015 15:51

It's very famous five.

badg3r · 22/07/2015 15:53

my friend has a Jack Russel called jonty.

forago · 22/07/2015 15:54

I really like it too my colleague has one, not short for anything and he says its a Cornish name.

Bellemere · 22/07/2015 15:55

I think it's okay as a nickname but not as a real name. It's a bit too posh for me.

Only1scoop · 22/07/2015 15:57

Know one male and one female both in 30's

Theas18 · 22/07/2015 15:58

Love it.

Casper27 · 22/07/2015 15:59

I once knew a big thoroughbred stallion called Jonty.

I only know Jonty as a shortened version of Jonathan.

MissBattleaxe · 22/07/2015 16:01

No. He'll never fit in anywhere! Too posh even for posh people!

houseofstark · 22/07/2015 16:01

I know two Jonty's aged 4 and under. Not sure they know each other though. It is a bit posh but but these families aren't as posh as you'd expect from the name. So if you like it, go for it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/07/2015 16:59

Awful.

Jonty would be the even pervier older brother of Uncle Monty from Withnail and I.

CakeRattleandRoll · 22/07/2015 17:12

I really like it, but would use as a nn for Jonathan.

reuset · 22/07/2015 19:45

It's kind of comedy 'posh'

reuset · 22/07/2015 19:45

Though I don't dislike it Confused

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/07/2015 19:48

It has to be short for Jonathan, I can't think of it as a name in its own right.

I don't like it personally, Ds has a friend called Jonty and it always seems a bit forced, can't exactiy put my finger on why I don't like it.

Raasay · 22/07/2015 19:49

Yes asa nickname for Jonathon, but not on it's own, no.

Also I would expect that as soon as he goes to high school it would be immediately shortened to 'Jon'.

Raasay · 22/07/2015 19:49

Pick something else as use John as a middle name.

thehogopogo · 22/07/2015 20:05

I'm South african and Jonty is very familiar to my ears. I think it's great and would be using it myself if my nephew hadn't just been named Monty. And I'm not posh.

BothEndsBurning · 22/07/2015 23:27

Absolutely hideous.

Lunastarfish · 22/07/2015 23:41

I love Jonty. Due to family members being called John it was on our list for boys, although I'd probably register as Jonathan

steppemum · 25/07/2015 14:46

years ago my brother had a close friend called Jonty. He was a Mohican punk in the 80s and I thought he was the coolest thing on 2 legs.

As a result I have always liked the name. Never saw it as posh, bu then, only really know one.
