Thoughts on Jonty?

Heard a little boy called this today, and I really like it, dp's dad was called john, but as my ex husbands name is Jonathan we ruled the name out straight away, so thought this would be nice as still has dp's name in it. Only thing putting me off is whether of not the name will be shortened to Jon which I'm not keen on x

It's a rather naff nickname for Jonathan.
I can never get over the fact it sounds exactly the same as "jaunty".

nooka · 25/07/2015 18:41

Agree with others that Jonty is not a name that stands up in it's own right. i think that given you don't like Jon (a very likely nn) and the issues with Jonathan, Jonty is really not a a good option for you.

Yarp · 25/07/2015 19:46

It's a bit Jasper or Barnaby

mrsdavidbowie · 25/07/2015 19:49

I would have to stifle a smirk I'm afraid.
It's such a mimsy sort of name.

I don't dislike the name in itself but for me Jonty is a staunch bigoted die-hard Northern Irish loyalist with an air of menace. Not quite sure why that is my impression since I don't think I have actually met any such person with that name but for some reason that is my mental image of a Jonty. Interesting to see others think it is dead posh.

Ankleswingers · 25/07/2015 21:52

Hideous

TheNewStatesman · 25/07/2015 22:04

As a given name? Are you serious?

It sounds like an upper-class mummy's boy. Call him Jonathon or John and let HIM decide if he wants this nickname or not.

GoulashSoup · 25/07/2015 22:07

I quite like it, makes me think of Jonty Rhodes. Not great if you have an issue with Jon though as there is a fair chance it will be a nn at some point.

MamaLazarou · 26/07/2015 14:03

It's ridiculously posh.

RustyBear · 26/07/2015 14:08

An ex-colleague has just called her boy this, though I'm not sure if it's his given name or short for Jonathan - his dad is called Jon.

She's a deputy head at a primary school - not sure whether you'd call that 'posh' or not?

Allalonenow · 26/07/2015 14:15

I like it as a nn for Jonathan, but not as a stand alone name, as while it's sweet for a little boy I don't think it works well as an adult name.

badtime · 26/07/2015 23:57

sycamore, I'm from NI, and I have always found it weird that MN is so convinced that 'Jonty' is posh.

I would think of it as actually a fairly normal nickname for people called Johnston or Johnson (and probably some Jonathans), usually a bit on the common side. Consequently, my image of Jonty wouldn't be a million miles off yours.

PallasCat · 27/07/2015 13:08

Exactly what nooka said. Kind of a high risk name for you given associations/dislike of Jon.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 27/07/2015 13:19

I think if you want to avoid Jonathan (for obvious reasons) then Jonty is off the list. Find another first name; recognize DP's dad with John as a middle name.
