What do you think of Marie as a first name?

Am due soon and still undecided. I think Marie (pronounced the French way) is so sweet, clam, classy and feminine and I like that it doesn't end with an 'a'.
Can't think why it's not used more. Is it just seen as very plain?
One thing that might bother me later on is that there are so many variations, Mary, Marion, Mariska, Mariella etc and all the double names, and of course it's used often as a middle name.
Anybody on here perhaps called Marie? What are your expreriences?

I think it's beautiful very unheard of now in children. It makes me think of Marie the cute white kitten the Aristocats

I was actually thinking the other day how you never hear of any Marias or Maries anymore, but it doesnt sound dated, it is pretty and classic

I have a good friend named Marie. It's a great name. She's ended up being 'Muh-ree' but I prefer 'Marry'.

Marie sounds very 1970s to me. Maria is lovely though.

Marie is lovely and underused. I think it's been more common as a middle name in the past.

it's our DD's nickname from a longer given name, came about because she reminded us of Marie from the aristocats (big blue eyes and slight princess tendancies!) we really like it.

also love Marianne as a longer given name for it.

I knew so many Marie's at school in the 80's and 90's that it's become very tired to me. So I'm not a fan, it sounds plain and dull to me.

Hate it. Don't like the sound of it; there was a fairly horrible character called Marie in the Antonia Forrest school stories, and I once had a colleague called Marie who was the most gormless person in the world.

I looooove it! But not pronounced marry, muh-REE is better. Gorgeous, classic, extremely underused.

Having gone to school with what feels like hundreds of them it isn't a name that was ever on my radar.

Out of curiosity I checked the ons.gov. statistics and it seems Marie ranked highest in the 70's around rank 45 (60's and 80's rank 66).

I prefer Maria. Marie is too 1970s.

I went to school with a Marie pronounce MAH-ree, so there's a third version for you.

I prefer longer variations of Mary. Marianne, Marina, Mariana are all beautiful, and can be shortened to Marie if it suits.

I'd pronounce Marie as Mah-ree.

If I wanted Mah ray I'd go for the Scottish name Mairi instead. (this was top choice for girls name but we had boys)

I also like a lot of the other Marie type names particularly Marissa and Marianne.

My first thought was "Osmond". I like it, though wouldn't choose it myself. Most of the (quite a few) Maries and Marias I know are Catholic - I assume because of the Mary connection.

How on earth is it common, Neednewflowers? I'm guessing you're not meaning common as in commonplace, since it really is not.

My middle name, it's a little bland for my liking but pleasant enough. It'll always have a touch of the 70's about it for me though.

I can picture a little Marie actually. I think it's lovely. I think it's fresh, not dated.
We have a three year old Marianne and people often compliment her on her name.

It's my mums, mine and my 2 year old daughters middle name. I was proud to pass it on.
