I really like it. Have DS1 with unusual name which he loves. Just not too sure if too out there, we live in nice area with good schools where newborns all seem to be Harry, George, William, Edward etc!

For the "only if you're Italian" people, is Bruno okay? What about Marco?

If the baby was a girl, would Isabella or Antonia be okay?

BeautifulBatman · 11/07/2015 09:21

Sanity - no, not ok. It's just wanky, try hard and pretentious. All in IMO, obvs.

I think having a kid called Rocco would prompt many more 'are you Italian?' queries than Isabella or Antonia would. I could be wrong!

crumpet · 11/07/2015 09:24

Not only is Alex Polizzi from an Italian family, her grandfather was also called Rocco

Marshy · 11/07/2015 09:27

Op it is an 'out there' name imo and people are going to have opinions about it.

If you're not happy about that perhaps you should call him something else.

Having said that, irl most people don't express opinions about names or will say something vague and then go Hmm in private so you probably won't know what they think anyway.

Does it matter? If you like it then go ahead.

florascotia · 11/07/2015 09:36

FWIW and taking no sides, Antonia is an ancient Roman name and has been known in the UK since the 16th cent, though not much used until the 19th. Isabella has been used in England since the 14th cent (it was the name of the mother of King Edward III, and he named one of his daughters after her). It was fashionable in Jane Austen's time.

Bruno and Marco have not been used in the UK in the same way.

Peanut14 · 11/07/2015 09:42

A friend named her little boy Rocco recently, no they're not Italian (gasp). It was a name I was indifferent about but it suits him perfectly.

Seriously 'porn star'......I'm sure the vast majority of people will not think of a porn star.

Go for it if you love it.

MannUp · 11/07/2015 09:51

I instantly thought of the porn star

Branleuse · 11/07/2015 09:53

I love it, but dp vetoed it, because of the porn star rocco siefredi?? Who id never heard of before he said that. I think most people arent going to be thinking that though

BothEndsBurning · 11/07/2015 10:37

If there's a Spanish background, what about Roque? He'd likely get called Rocco or Rocky as nn's, but it would be nice to have the Spanish spelling behind it as he has Spanish blood (at least I think so)

80schild · 11/07/2015 10:43

So long as your child doesn't turn out to be the sensitive type it will be fine.

Sophronia · 11/07/2015 11:01

It reminds me of the porn star too.

BothEndsBurning · 11/07/2015 11:12

I must be the only one who doesn't watch porn Grin

Sparklingbrook · 11/07/2015 11:20

My first thought was that Madonna has a son called it. Which makes it a bit naff.

SanityClause · 11/07/2015 11:57

So, BeatifulBatman, it was okay to use Italian names in the past, but not now?

BeautifulBatman · 11/07/2015 12:03

I didn't say that did I? Confused

florascotia · 11/07/2015 12:25

And I didn't say it was wrong to use any name at any time. I simply said that Antonia and Isabella had been around in the UK for centuries. The implication was, I suppose, that they had now become 'British'. Bruno and Marco, less so.

IF it matters, the Queen Isabella I mentioned (mother of Edward III) was French, not Italian. She was quite a character: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_of_France

Marshy · 11/07/2015 14:31

What sounds cute on a baby may be harder to wear as the baby gets older.

My 18yo ds says Rocco sounds like a knobhead.

Marshy · 11/07/2015 14:33

Mind you, he doesn't know what we nearly called him Grin Cornelius, after my great uncle

rockybalboa · 11/07/2015 14:37

Jeez, what is it with snippy OP's on this topic? If you are going to ask people what you think of a name then don't get the hump when people say they don't like it. Otherwise what is the point of your post?! If you can't tolerate anyone saying they don't like it then don't post! Perhaps try Netmums where the common response will be "luv it hun". Biscuit

orangepudding · 11/07/2015 14:41

I know a five year old Rocco and it really doesn't suit him. I do like the name but it can be a difficult one to carry off.

DurhamDurham · 11/07/2015 14:43

Not being an expert on porn I immediately just connected the name with Madonna. I dislike anything at all to do with Madonna so it doesn't get my vote.

I do think it's a bit pointless to ask for opinions and then get offended when people share their opinions.

BeautifulBatman · 11/07/2015 14:44

Exactly Rocky. It's quite puzzling. I have names in mind for my dc due in Oct. If I wanted opinions on here (which I don't, I am happy with my choices), I'd certainly be expecting some dislikes. It's a bit daft to ask for an opinion if you don't want an honest answer.

mrsdavidbowie · 11/07/2015 14:44

I agree with the Madonna connection.

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/07/2015 15:07

It's the kind of name I'd expect a footballer's kid to be called. There are much nicer Italian names in my opinion.
