No not at all. John is quite unheard of now. All those fancy names have almost had their day now.
If you're considering this name. Go for it.

As for easy to spell - yes, but, I have come across Jon's, who pronounced their name in the exact same way as you would pronounce John.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/07/2015 10:56

Yes, but saying 'No, it's Jay Oh Aitch Enn, not Jay Oh Enn' to the odd person who wonders if it's the less common spelling is not too daunting.

It's not quite like saying 'No, it's Pee Tee Oh Ell Ee Emm Y'.

FraggleHair · 08/07/2015 11:13

I like John and love Johnny.

Dislike Jonathan and strongly dislike Jonty.

daisywellies · 08/07/2015 11:31

Nice name, due a revival.

BothEndsBurning · 08/07/2015 11:51

IME John does often get misspelled as Jhon. Not a big deal though. People who do this are capable of misspelling most names.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 08/07/2015 11:52

I'd actually consider John, but I know my dd would insist on calling him Johnny (which I hate). She's a bloody torment Grin

ems942 · 08/07/2015 11:58

I'd be calling my baby John nn Johnny if I wasn't expecting a girl! I love it.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 08/07/2015 12:06

I love it. I love Jonathan too. I couldn't use it though, even though it was a family name, as I had a strangely high number of John/Jonny/Jonathan exes!

Out of my kids' friends, we know 3 John/Jonathan's (non UK). All 3 are very high achieving all rounders.

IsItStupid · 08/07/2015 12:29

John in a lovely name, I really like it. The traditional nickname is Jack, but you also have Johnny/Johnnie or Jonty if you really want to (as others have pointed out).

John is a nice, familiar name. It's quite classless (as in it transcends class, not as in loutish!) and doesn't peg your child into any one hole.

As for boring? It's short and used to be very popular but I wouldn't call it boring. I would call it safe though!

I think it's very cute on children and sensible on adults. In the poems of A.A. Milne, Christopher Robin's little brother/cousin/friend is called John (I think) and so I often think of those (very cute) poems when I hear the name in connection with a child. I think that's a very unusual association though, and I'm not sure if you'd consider it a positive or a negative!

PallasCat · 08/07/2015 20:40

Not at all. It's a beautiful name (cards on the table - I'm totally biased). Also IME it is now more unusual than boys who are given Johnny/Johnnie as their name on BC. It's great - go for it.

HuftysTrain · 08/07/2015 20:49

I think Johnny is adorable on a baby. Then v cool on a teen.

GRW · 08/07/2015 22:25

It would have been my choice if I'd had a boy. Classic and underused.

mummyplus7 · 09/07/2015 10:21

As a teacher, I've never taught a John so I would think it's uncommon enough to use. Much better than Jack.

CordeliaFrost · 09/07/2015 11:29

Not at all.

I've met one baby John in the past five years, yet countless baby Jacks and Olivers, so I'd consider them boring right now!

LovelyBranches · 11/07/2015 21:57

My DS, DF and DH all have John as middle names so extremely positive associations of calm, loving and fantastic men (and baby boy).

HighOverTheFenceLeapsSunnyJim · 12/07/2015 10:48

Update: He is now 5 days old and called Johnny mostly, but will be John on registration.

Classic name, not too morning IMO. Like Jonathan too.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/07/2015 11:53

Congratulations! Lovely name. Hope all goes well for you both. Thanks

IsItStupid · 12/07/2015 23:36

How lovely! Congratulations. Smile Flowers

I like John a lot. It's my dad's name (and also my grandad's and DH's grandad's) and when I was younger it was still very common, and I thought of it as a rather plain, boring name. But now it's a bit more unusual, it's really grown on me, and I rather like it when people used it for little boys. (One of my DC has it for a middle name, but I kind of wish I had been brave enough to use it for a first name as his real first name turned out to be really excessively popular for his age group, and he's always one of 3 or 4!)

I don't agree with the comments that it's easy to spell though. It's easy for me to spell because I've grown up seeing it all the time, but a lot of children I know can't remember where the H goes and write Jhon or even Jonh. This seems to happen less where there's actually a John in the class and they see it written down a lot.

cecilelliott · 14/07/2015 21:45

I think John is a great name.

Classic, good nicknames and would stick out (in a good way) among the many Olivers, Theos, Reubens, Tobys and Leos.

VodIsGod · 14/07/2015 21:57

Congratulations! I have a John (Johnny) and obviously think it's a fantastic name! Enjoy himThanks

Stitchintime1 · 14/07/2015 21:59

I think it's so traditional it's almost exotic. I like it very much. More than Jonathan which was vogueish for a while. I like the name Peter too. And Jane so long as it isn't with a Y.
