Grr.. That really.
Ds1 is due today and after 9 months of stewing over a name for him ( feel like all the ones I love are spoken for by friends and family's kids) my brother in law has just named his puppy Ted. I could cry. Especially as he named his son Rex which to me is a better dog name..
We had decided a few days ago on Ted Sidney E... But feel that we can't use it now.
Any other Ted-like names we might like? Middle name is Sidney and surname begins with an E.

Ask him to change the dog's name or still name your DS Ted.
Your child is more important than the dog and will be around for longer.

MamaLazarou · 06/07/2015 17:05

Wow, so many Ted threads lately!

Sorry to hear about the dog, OP. I would suggest Eddie or Ned.

chrome100 · 06/07/2015 18:37

You are being ridiculous! Who cares if your kid has the same name as it's uncles dog? Call him ted. I had the same name as my gran's dog (Meg) and no one batted an eyelid.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/07/2015 18:41

Call him Theodore then use Ted as the nickname. Once he's of an age for it to cause confusion (which should only be between say 2 and 5), use Theodore when you are visiting.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/07/2015 18:41

Or ignore it and call him Ted. How often do you see BIL anyway?

HettyB · 06/07/2015 18:53

Use it anyway and if anyone points out that it's the same as BIL's dog, then you can say "yes, we told BIL that we were naming our son Ted and he named his puppy it the very next day!". Then who looks like a tosser?

TwoTribes · 06/07/2015 18:54

Really don't like the long versions of Ted, plus our surname begins with an e so would sound silly.

Why would the 'e' sound silly? Unless you are talking about Ted E (teddy) in which case you wouldn't want the name Ted anyway would you?

YonicScrewdriver · 06/07/2015 19:07

I think OP means Edward Evert or whatever her surname is wouldn't work.

CheeseandGherkins · 06/07/2015 19:09

I would just use it, bollocks to him! My mil, and her then partner, named their dog my dh's middle name when he was a young teen...Awful.

PattyPenguin · 06/07/2015 19:18

I knew a bloke who used to complain bitterly (after a few pints) that his parents had named him after his gran's budgie. His middle name, which hardly anyone knew (and no-one would have known had he kept quiet) was Joseph, and I'm pretty sure the budgie was Joey, so I thought he was imagining things, myself.

I vote for calling the baby Edward (if a boy) and using Ted as a nickname. And never, ever, mentioning the dog.

(Plus, if he decides he doesn't like Ted when he gets older, he can change his nickname to Ed / Eddie / Ned.)

Stoppissingonthefloor · 06/07/2015 22:01

Decision made. Keeping Ted. Bil is a crapheap.
Thanks ladies x

Your better update whether it is a ted-boy or a girl,op!

SylvaniansAtEase · 06/07/2015 22:06

Call baby Ted, and then when BIL mentions it insist that he is wrong and that the dog is called Tid, not Ted.

'But you called him Tid. We distinctly remember you saying he was called Tid. It's a lovely name for a dog, you shouldn't worry about it'

'But no my dog is called Ted.'

'Ha! So funny BIL. No, he's Tid. I mean come on, you wouldn't have called him the same name as our baby would you? That would be mean. And Tid's precious daddy would never be mean.'

'MY DOG IS CALLED TED!'

'Oh come on don't get upset. You'll scare Tid! Come on Tid come and cheer your daddy up... He's getting a little upset...'

etc. Grin

Ned is also a diminutive of Edward.

Or Eddard, obv

NoMontagues · 06/07/2015 22:10

Glad you're keeping Ted OP

Yes, please do follow sylvanian's plan Grin

Foxxie52 · 06/07/2015 22:11

"How long do Jack Russell's live anyway?"

Just reminds me of Rachel asking it in friends.
"How long do cats live anyway, you know, if you don't throw them under a bus or anything...."

Indiana Jones was named after the dog.

That is a very dickish thing to do, why would he do it, is he normally so obnoxious? I would just go with it (well Iwouldn't bc I don't like it & there 10 million teds round here!)

stolemyusername · 06/07/2015 22:17

My 'd'b used dad's name for his new puppy, did was 14 at the time and saw him regularly Confused

stolemyusername · 06/07/2015 22:18

Autocorrect dd not dad or did

Stoppissingonthefloor · 06/07/2015 22:25

He is a prick to be honest. Prob didn't even like the name Ted, just did it to be a tool. We're in Northern Ireland which is around 20 years behind with everything so no teds here as yet yay! I'm a teacher and not one in our school of 800 (yes I'm a sad act and checked )

Pleased to hear you are sticking with Ted.

My cousin was given the same name as my uncles dog, so got the same name as the family pet (Ben). The dog is long gone now - I doubt anyone remembers.

TheCraicDealer · 06/07/2015 22:40

Also in NI here [waves] please consider what TwoTribes says. Ted E is going to be harder to carry off than Theodore E as a grown up. It's memorable but not in a good way; you'd need to be very robust to carry off the same jokes again and again. Also I'm someone who thanks my parents every single day for giving me the Long Version of my NN, so many more options. We know a baby Teddy ('just' Teddy) and whilst it's adorable and suits him now I do always think his parents should have given him the option.

Frig your BIL, call your kid what you want and tell everyone that he stole the name because he's never been very imaginative and couldn't think of anything himself.

Stoppissingonthefloor · 06/07/2015 22:56

My cousin has a Theodore so that's out.. He gets theo.
I just meant E is the first letter of our surname. Baby will be Ted Sidney (after late dad) Elsen. Prob outed myself but ah well
