Rupert - honest opinions, please!

I really like the name Rupert, but my hubby thinks it sounds a bit 'overheard in Waitrose'! I can see his point, but I also think it's a good traditional name that will work well with his older sister's name (Martha) and sounds good on a boy and a man. However, I'd hate to think it would lead to bullying in the playground.

What do people honestly think? Thank you!!!

I like it. I don't see it as either posh or wet, just a classy name that seems to be largely neglected. There are a few famous Ruperts and none of them are regarded as posh or wet.

The Irish jockey Ruby Walsh is really Rupert.

Yellowbird01 · 03/07/2015 22:07

Rupert is lovely and I think it goes very well with martha!

Candycoco · 03/07/2015 22:09

Love it Smile

Purplehonesty · 03/07/2015 22:13

Stuck up officer. A Rupert.

I think it depends on where you live tho. Here it would sound silly, Home Counties not so much.

Wailywailywaily · 03/07/2015 22:14

My brothers name is Rupert and he is neither posh nor wet Grin no one has ever bullied him either. Though I teased him a lot about a bear.
It's a good strong name that is well known but not often used.

50ShadesofNope · 03/07/2015 22:26

Campbell-Black first, then Bear.

Totally posh. I still love it thoughGrin

villainousbroodmare · 03/07/2015 22:27

Woeful.

purdiepipesup · 03/07/2015 22:33

Posher than I should be able to stomach but I bloody love it. I'm pregnant and desperate to use it but I live on a council estate in the North West and am too class conscious to have the nerve Sad

StellaAlpina · 03/07/2015 22:39

I've only ever known nice Ruperts.

Plus you could call him Teddy or Bear while he's little.

As a downside I'd say there aren't many good nickname options for an adult Rupert.

FixItUpChappie · 03/07/2015 22:41

Honesty, I think it is a bit ridiculous as a name. I'm not sure why I feel that way....but I do.

thatsalovelyhat · 03/07/2015 22:46

It doesn't matter what other people think, as long as you can imagine yourself shouting 'Rupert! ... (etc)' in the park, playgroup and generally in public, without fear or embarrassment.

It's probably more important that both you and your husband positively like the name you give your child.

Sophronia · 03/07/2015 23:16

I think it goes very well with Martha.

floatyflo · 03/07/2015 23:19

Reminds me of the bear but I love it. Goes brilliantly with Martha and if you and Dp like it then why the hell not.

I didn't use a name for DD for fear of what people might think and now I bitterly regret it.

Ludways · 03/07/2015 23:24

I love it, a really cool guy I grew up with. That said, even now years later I always think "Roo's a poo" after one of my other really cool teenage mates taught Rupert's parrot to say it when he was holiday sitting it one year, lol

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 04/07/2015 00:06

I know a rupert about 18 months old.
And I have seen a newborn rupert.
I think it is making a start at being trendy!
I don't think I would have a rupert, but if you like it,it's fine. It would look like we copied...
At least you know it's a boy name, not like a lot of trendy unisex ones.

FraggleHair · 04/07/2015 00:09

I'd be mortified calling out 'Rupert' in a public place so it's a no from me.

happyNotanymore · 04/07/2015 00:17

My friend son is called Rupert , I like it even though it still brings the bear to my mind . They call him Rups ,and I think it's very sweet.

If you like it GO for it !!!!! There will be ones that like it and the others that not so much ! Like with everything else in this word Smile

weasle · 04/07/2015 00:23

Love it. Couldn't use for family reasons, but v fond of it. Goes well with Martha.

raf79 · 04/07/2015 08:13

Thanks, everyone. Some of the replies in the 'no' camp made me chuckle! Hadn't realised the squaddie slang thing, and hubby says it fails the park test for him so I think we might have to go for something else. But what?!?!

Mamab33 · 04/07/2015 08:15

Love it!

Zakken · 04/07/2015 10:01

It would pass the park test for me because I'd probably use Roo (or Rue) for that purpose.

CharlieCoCo · 04/07/2015 19:05

i know a Bear or a "Bear Bear" whose real name is Rupert.

honeyandfizz · 04/07/2015 19:21

Hate it. Unless your aristocracy then you may just get away with it.

susurration · 04/07/2015 20:00

I like it.

HaleMary · 04/07/2015 20:05

The only Rupert I knew was reading PPE, had swishy corn-coloured locks, would inherit a considerable chunk of the North of England, and had a half-blue in croquet.
