What can Ted be short for?

I love Ted as a nn for a boy. What else can it be short for other than Edward or Edmund (neither of which I'm keen on). Theodore, I guess, but then we'd risk it being shortened to Theo, which I don't like at all...

Edward - most people will assume that's what its short for.

We can't use Edward as the 'real' name (family reasons) so it'd need to be something else. DH has vetoed Theodore as 'pretentious'.

I don't think I could ever bring myself to actually name a child this as their proper birth certificate name, but I do quite like the Tedbert nickname mentioned by a pp.

OP, is there any reason why you can't just use Ted as your DS's name?

Don't use Teddington! Isn't Ten Ton Ted from Teddington a Benny Hill character?

Why are you trying to allocate a name just because you like the nn? Just call the baby Ted!

Just call him Ted on his birth certificate.

We loved Theo, but not any other variations (Theodore for example) so just went for that.

His everyday name is Teddy

Edmund on the birth certificate (if you really can't use Edward) to give him options - Ned and Ed are good too.

Then just call him Ted from the beginning.

@CityDweller - I realise this is late and that this won’t help you but may help others with the same dilemma. I was looking through my family tree and found a Walter who had the nickname Ted. I think this is lovely!

If you’re happier with a more tenuous link then you could go for Alfred or Wilfred

Tobias Edward - Ted
Timothy Edwin - Ted

My pup is named Ted. DH calls him Tedminster. No idea why. He is nuts.

Almost all the baby boys I know born this year have been called Ted or Teddy! It's hugely popular and will easily end up in the top 10 so I think in 10 years' time will be a stand alone name like Jack or Harry.
I think if you like Theodore but instantly call him Ted to everyone, nobody's going to call him Theo. In 6 months time most people won't remember what his 'long' name is! But agree it is right to give him a proper name on his birth certificate. Edgar is another choice but is a similar vibe to Edmund which you don't like (I love it). If you want traditional and inoffensive then Edward is good. If you don't intend to use it day-to-day then don't overthink it too much.

We have a dog called Eddie whose full name is Eddington Teddington (don't ask me why - it just came out one day!) so it might have us me calling him!
