what is the opinion on Thora?

I really like it, it has a strong meaning 'thunder goddess'. and Thora Birch is a pretty cool name sake.

but does it make you think of Thora Hird? ( I'm hoping as she has been gone for some time now that that association will only be for the older generation)

Love it!!

GinUpGirl · 03/07/2015 21:20

I don't like it, but only really because my brain is desperate to put an X on the end!

chiruri · 03/07/2015 21:26

I initially thought of Thora Birch Blush
I'be never really thought about it as a name before, but I really like it! It's really unusual, but not weird or made-up sounding.

ememem84 · 03/07/2015 21:27

Love it. It's my grandmas name.

There's a song about a thora. A really old song. My great grandma heard it and named grandma after it. Never heard it though helpful

fanjodisfunction · 04/07/2015 07:05

ememem84 this might be the song.

fanjo THANK YOU!!!

You've just made grandma so very happy. I've called her and played the song down the phone to her. That's the one. She hasn't heard it for years. And is so happy.

I'm trying to see if I can buy it for her. Smile

Thora Hird. Great name besides, too.

Pfft to Whore-ah. Who would say that? You don't hear Charlotte- harlot or any other half a dozen similar names out there

doublepotions · 04/07/2015 16:01

Love it, much better than Thea.

ashtrayheart · 04/07/2015 16:06

Like a previous poster I thought oh no then said it and liked it! I had the same feeling with Agatha Grin

littlejohnnydory · 04/07/2015 23:45

I did think Thora Hird but that wouldn't stop me. It's a lovely name.

JakeyBurd · 04/07/2015 23:56

Yes, I associate it with Thora Hird, but what's wrong with that? Terrific character actress and will be remembered long after your other lassie, whom I'd not heard of, is forgotten.

FraggleHair · 05/07/2015 02:28

My initial reaction was 'oh no, Thora Hird!'

And then I felt like a cow. Thora Hird was an accomplished actress a and national treasure, not exactly Myra Hindley territory by any means. And none of little Thora's contemporaries will ever make the Hird association.

And yet, I can't exactly warm to it..............

canweseethebunnies · 05/07/2015 19:50

I think it's great. I think the bad association with Thora Hird is just that most remember her as a very old lady, so it seems dated, but actually it's never been common enough to 'date', has it? Great name.

fanjodisfunction · 05/07/2015 20:05

thank you ladies, I have now put it at the top of the list (well its the only name on the list lol)

I love it, in fact it's just made its way into my top 5. Especially with the addition of that lovely, if sad song fanjo posted.

Just done a quick google on both of the Thoras mentioned up thread - not heard of either of them, but they hardly seem like someone you'd shrink from sharing a name with.
