what is the opinion on Thora?

I really like it, it has a strong meaning 'thunder goddess'. and Thora Birch is a pretty cool name sake.

but does it make you think of Thora Hird? ( I'm hoping as she has been gone for some time now that that association will only be for the older generation)

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/07/2015 15:15

I'm in my teens, so not older generation, and I think of Thora Hird, but I love her! Wouldn't think of T Birch, I know who she is of course, but not interested in her.
(I have a rabbit named Thora, it's a gorgeous name)

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 03/07/2015 15:31

No I don't think. Too harsh sounding.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/07/2015 15:32

It's not a harsh name at all, it's beautiful imo.

fanjodisfunction · 03/07/2015 16:21

I'm glad its getting some love Grin

I really like it. Don't know who Hird is.

Pagalee · 03/07/2015 16:44

I like it a lot, strong yet pretty.

QueefOfTheSporned · 03/07/2015 16:48

Thora Hird = turd (rhyming slang).

Sorry, but it's the first thing that sprang to mind.

Lindy2 · 03/07/2015 16:53

I think Thea has a softer sound to it.

ElviraCondomine · 03/07/2015 17:45

I love the name Thora but then I love Norse inspired names generally.

And Thora Hird was actually an amazing actress. I recommend watching her in her 20s in Went the Day Well (1940s film about the Nazis invading England) , and then in her 90s in Pat and Margaret, or Dinnerladies (just the one scene but she steals it) delivering Victoria Wood's dialogue with so much class and style.

fanjodisfunction · 03/07/2015 17:48

went the day well is my grandads favourite movie, I think if he was alive and we did call our next Thora he would be made up.

Thora is lovely!

MamaLazarou · 03/07/2015 19:28

Just makes me think of 'Thorax', sorry. And Thora Hird.

SunshineAndShadows · 03/07/2015 19:32

Can't imagine any of her peers will have a clue who Thora Hird is!

Regardless of associations it's a nice name, underused

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/07/2015 19:39

I agree, none of her peers will have a clue who Thora Hird is.

Zakken · 03/07/2015 19:48

Thora Hird was awesome. A national treasure. The kids won't know, but in years to come her namesakes may enjoy watching her work.

It's a nice name and not ten-a-penny.

When I saw your thread title I thought oh god no!

Then I said it out loud... I actually quite like it!

Zakken · 03/07/2015 20:50

"Thora the Whore-ah"

Lots of names rhyme with something indelicate. How odd to force this particular rhyme and point it out.

TRexingInAsda · 03/07/2015 20:52

My first thought was Thora Hird and I'm not even old.

BagsyThisName · 03/07/2015 21:01

What is your/ the local accent? Where i live 'Th' names should be avoided like the plague unless you really want a Fora, Feo, Fea etc

fanjodisfunction · 03/07/2015 21:09

I loving the love for the name.

the rhyming thing doesn't bother me, my name was always rhymed with one thing or another and my name is very common for me age group.

I don't think the pronunciation with be a problem, and it quite a strong th sound I think.

Just awful - sorry. This one might be a marmite name.
