DS will be here next week (she says so naively.. Prob another 3 weeks going on dds timekeeping) and can't choose between these names

Ben
Sid
Ted

Not short for anything, just on their own. Not wanting to get into a bc debate, just want to know what you like the best and if you don't like any, why? (Just for the record , Sid is my late fathers name, I am aware it's better suited to a snake but felt it should be a contender)
Thank you ! X

Ben is my favourite (I have one) it's not at all wet, it's timeless and non faddy. All Ben's I know have been quite cool kids but it's not a massivley popular name so won't end up one of many in his class.

Ted would be my next fav although I worry that it's becoming more popular and it might date soon if it becomes a fad name. I know a couple little Ted's and they really suit the name.

Don't like Sid, not really sure why though.

OP, ONS is the Office for National Statistics, latest data published at the moment is for the year 2013.
Link that link is England and Wales so I expect other countries will compile their own records.

I think a very short name would be good with your surname and I wouldn't worry about nick names, often it seems like a MN obsession to say Charles nn Charlie or Elizabeth nn Lizzy when what's really meant is 'to be known as'
In my experience friends and family coin nicknames which evolve and often don't relate to the given name at all.

One of my DCs got a nickname before turning one and apart from official documents everyone uses that.

Ben

IcecreamHavoc · 03/07/2015 14:07

I love all the names. Choose Sid!

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/07/2015 14:17

I like Ted best. Sid is fairly nice, though I'd prefer Sidney. Ben is dull and far too common.

Blondie87 · 03/07/2015 15:06

Ben- a nice classic name. Not hugely exciting but a safe bet.
Sid- I can't really imagine a child called Sid!
Ted- I like this.

Stoppissingonthefloor · 03/07/2015 15:48

Ok think we'll definitely be going with Ted Sidney E....
Thank you wise mumsnetters! x

Love your choice! I was going to say Ted or Sid rather than Ben-perfect!

GoStraightGoStraight · 03/07/2015 21:05

Sid is not very nice.

Ben is fine but boring.

Ted is nice. Teddy is better.

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 03/07/2015 21:10

I like Sid. And once it's an actual baby's name rather than a hypothetical one, no one will think negative things about it.

birchygoo · 03/07/2015 22:22

I never comment on these as I hate when people are tearing apart names - i feel its a good job we all have different tastes or we would all have the same names and that would be a nightmare and make for a boring life!

names come to suit the child.. eg I hated name jack (due to a jack I knew who was an ass), begged my friend not to call her baby jack, she didn't listen and am glad she didn't as now it suits him sooo well!

anyway to your question they are all timeless names. I love sid and the fact it is personal. it fits in when short snappy name trends at the minute without being over used.

Ben I like - I only know one my age and it is short for Brendan (comes back to previous poster who said ppl get nicknames not relating to their name) i do have a wee soft spot for Benjamin or Benny for short (I know an adult called Benny and it still suits him but I also think it's a lovely cute baby name)

Ted is probably bottom of my list but it comes back to association - only Ted I have ever knew is old !an when I was growing up on crutches. so I just hear the name of think of him. nothing against the name. it also reminds me of the film ted - good show thou!

you choose what feels right for you and your wee man! you will never please everyone with a name!

dotdotdotmustdash · 04/07/2015 10:05

I have an 18yr old Ben, he's not wet or drippy and he can definitely grow a beard (judging by the hairs on the sink!).

NoArmaniNoPunani · 04/07/2015 10:08

I love Sidney, it was my grandad's name. Not so keen on just Sid though.

Iliveinalighthousewith2friendl · 04/07/2015 15:59

I can't pick apart any of your names . They're all gorgeous.
I can't actually fault Ben
Safe
Sensible
Suits through every stage of life.
Not as heard of now, so the boring chestnut goes out the window.

Sid. I actually quite like it, all the cutesy old man names are coming back now.

Ted. Is adorable.
