DS will be here next week (she says so naively.. Prob another 3 weeks going on dds timekeeping) and can't choose between these names

Ben
Sid
Ted

Not short for anything, just on their own. Not wanting to get into a bc debate, just want to know what you like the best and if you don't like any, why? (Just for the record , Sid is my late fathers name, I am aware it's better suited to a snake but felt it should be a contender)
Thank you ! X

Ted is getting soooo popular
Don't mind Ben (love Benedict)
Really like Sid

KoalaDownUnder · 03/07/2015 04:17

Sid sounds evil.

Ben is boring

Ted is by far the best.

swimmerforlife · 03/07/2015 04:20

Sid is awful and Ted is only slightly better. Ben is fine a bit naff though.

nooka · 03/07/2015 05:04

Sid and Ted are just too short/nicknamish for me, so Ben is the best (although i still prefer Benjamin/Benedict).

I quite like Sidney, makes me think of Six Dinner Sid, which was one of my children's favourite picture books.

Ted currently makes me think of Father Ted as we are rewatching it. I don't think it stands well on it's own.

LovethenameDaphne · 03/07/2015 08:24

I think you should go wit Sid. It's a cool name and will fit in well with his age group, as lots of babies have old man names.
It's personal to you and that means so much more than just a random collection of letters!!
Ben is dull and Ted is nice but go with Sid!!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/07/2015 08:31

There are millions of Bens, but it's still a nice name.

Ted is fab.

Sid - initially I thought nooo but actually I think it could be great. I met a baby Ernie the therapy, so I think theold man names are back with a vengeance. I think it is quite a cool name -has connotations of wheeler dealers/teddy boys to me. Definitely not a "cute" name but so what. No worse than Seth IMO.

Branleuse · 03/07/2015 08:33

I would choose Sid. Its a great name. Brilliant

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/07/2015 08:35

Dislike Sid.

Like Ben.

Prefer Teddy.

Peacheykeen · 03/07/2015 08:36

I like Ted as a nn for Edward but not as a given name I knew a lovely little boy called Sid his proper name was Sidney.

scribblegirl · 03/07/2015 08:42

Love Sid. There was a Sid in the tv show Skins who was a teen and it didn't seem jarring or unsuited to that age IMO.

Like Ted but worry it's part of the 'old man' names bandwagon, like Alfie etc.

So. bored. Of the name Ben. Not a fan.

inmyshoos · 03/07/2015 08:46

I like Ted best but agree it should be short for something rather than a full name. Edward or Theodore are both nice.

Elvish · 03/07/2015 08:55

Over the last 5 years I know of about 5 babies with a name shortened to Ted. Only 1 Ben. Sid is in the trend of old man names.

I would go for Ben as it's the most timeless option, but I think using a family name / something you have a connection with is lovely.

Have you checked the ONS records to see which was most popular - or are you not bothered about it?

Stoppissingonthefloor · 03/07/2015 08:59

Thank you all!
Love whoever said that Ben is wet and wint be able to grow a beard haha!
My fav is Ted, Dh's is Ben..
I'm not against Edward, just that our surname is 2 syllabled beginning with e..

Ben.
Not keen on Sid & Ted is very popular around here (SE Essex)

Ben is classic but not hugely popular.

Stoppissingonthefloor · 03/07/2015 09:27

What's ONS record?

florascotia · 03/07/2015 09:27

Ben (safe) or Ted (currently quite popular) are both fine. Sid/Sidney always reminds me of 'kidney'.

Your baby, your choice of name, but I do tend to agree with the people who say 'use a longer name on the bc so that he'll have more of a choice as he grows up'.

As well as Edward or Theodore, suggested by earlier poster, Ted could be short for Edmund, Edgar, Edwin .... they might perhaps go better with your surname than Edward. I really like Edmund.

Stoppissingonthefloor · 03/07/2015 09:33

We're in Northern Ireland, I don't know of any teds and I'm a primary school teacher. We are a bit behind in the times though..

I like Sid as a nn for Sidney. Ted is ok but its really trendy atm. Ben I find really boring.

Lucaslovesfelicity · 03/07/2015 10:04

Ben - Strong, handsome, not boring... BiasedWink

Ted - lovely, was also on my list.

Sid.. Quite like. Grin

BubGal13 · 03/07/2015 10:15

All Ben's I know are hugely popular, chilled, funny, kind and fab generally, not at all wet.
Sid and Ted both sound a bit 60's East end London...not my style....

batfish · 03/07/2015 10:28

I really like Ben and Ted, not so much Sid. Just because I feel like it is an old man's name but you have personal reasons for wanting to use it so that is different. But then it doesn't sound like you like it really either. Maybe use it is a middle name but the long version (assume Sidney?) because 2 x 3 letter names sounds a bit abrupt!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 03/07/2015 10:45

Ben - classic but very popular. 5 bens in class below ds.
Ted- ugh. No thanks.
Sid- different. Nice. Sweet.

purdiepipesup · 03/07/2015 10:46

Ben is uninspired. The other two are great.

Kangaroo1 · 03/07/2015 10:51

I know a little boy called Sid, adorable. It's the kid that makes a name like that come to life Smile

Sophronia · 03/07/2015 11:21

Sid, but I do prefer it short for Sidney.
