Due a come-back, or not?

OP posts:

Again those names (Carol, Brian) considerably predate the 1970s as far as popularity goes.

jamaisdeux · 02/07/2015 15:59

We need to talk about...

No, I couldn't use it having read that book.

SlightlyJaded · 02/07/2015 15:59

I reckon we're going to see a rise in the Helen, Claire, Sarah, Emma, Rebecca types once all the Maud's, Violets and Vita's have stopped.

I'm not sure what the boy equivalents are to these - it's not quite the Kevin/Wayne/Dean brigade (although it is 70's 80's naming) I suppose it would be David, Mark, Stephen, John and Richard.

Good solid names that are so honest and straight that they almost stop being dull and start sounding new.

Badgerwife · 02/07/2015 16:11

god I hope not. I blame the Minions

ephemeralfairy · 02/07/2015 16:32

Ha ha DP is called Gavin. He is an Essex boy and love playing up to the strereotype

Finola1step · 02/07/2015 16:39

You don't hear many baby boys called Colin these days, maybe that will eventually make a come back.

Thelma, Gary, Barry, Tracey, Sheila, Marjorie. Anyone?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 02/07/2015 16:43

I can't hear it without wanting to scream it like the mother from Home Alone, when she realises she made it half way through a transatlantic flight before remembering that he was still in the upstairs room she sent him to for something that wasn't even really his fault in the first place Hmm

Either that or the minion. Better that than Gavin though.

butterfly133 · 02/07/2015 16:43

OP, I'm guessing the problem here is the book? Or am I way off the mark?

I don't think the name will separate from the book for decades, but if that's not what you are worried about, then it's irrelevant anyway.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 02/07/2015 16:44

I love Marjorie!

Marjorie is simply smashing.

FraggleHair · 02/07/2015 16:48

I never think of the book when I hear the name. I suppose it's because it's such a common name among certain age groups and I associate it with so many people before I'd ever get to that pop culture reference.

Maybe if the book was called We Need To Talk About Horatio

Zakken · 02/07/2015 16:57

I've been saying for a while that Marjorie should be coming back soon, it's a pretty name and many of its contemporaries are in fashion. The objection seems to be "margarine" but really, who calls it that nowadays? It's all "spread" or brand names like, er, Flora.

There's a version (Margaery) in Game Of Thrones of course. Don't know if that would give it a boost or hold it back.

OnIlkelyMoorBahtat · 02/07/2015 17:11

Gary, Barry, Brian, Derek, Nigel, Graham, Duncan, Bruce. Whither???

FraggleHair · 02/07/2015 17:13

Oh yes, Whither is gorgeous. An underused classic.

No! to Kevin! Shock

It makes me think of that film

We need to talk about Kevin

The main character is this revolting child who tortures people and ends up going on a mass killing spree. Ever since I saw that film I associate the name Kevin with psychos.
Sorry.

butterfly133 · 02/07/2015 17:20

brickinit - that's what the book is about. I only watched 20 minutes of the film though. I thought it was awful. There was no dialogue. I couldn't see how such a fantastically written book became that on screen - apparently the rest is very similar, so although we had the DVD from Lovefilm, we were told if we disliked the start, the rest of it wasn't going to change our feelings.

PuckyMup · 02/07/2015 17:35

Kevin, Dave, Stuart and Bob. Definitely due a comeback.

These are minions from Despicable Me :D

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 02/07/2015 17:38

Is it just me who thinks of the gerbil?

juneau · 02/07/2015 17:43

Marjorie is bloody awful!

There is something a bit sexy about Gavin though ...

Zakken · 02/07/2015 17:48

I don't think Stuart has ever been away - at least in England (I imagine it's different in Scotland). It's one of those names that has never been either in or out of fashion. It was the name of my only uncle, so I tend to notice it whenever it crops up.

AgentCooper · 02/07/2015 17:48

I don't mind it if it goes with an Irish surname. My cousin is Kevin and it suits him.

Re: Kevins in France, Zakken, my pal told me a Kevin is what they call a wee guy who wears a shell suit and causes trouble at holiday camps on his moto. And a Jacky, often the dad of a Kevin, is an older guy with a big belly who wears a white vest at all times and drinks Pastis.

FraggleHair · 02/07/2015 17:48

There's something a bit sexy about Gavin Esler, not sure about the name Gavin though.

Marjorie is indeed horrific.

juneau · 02/07/2015 18:15

Mmm I agree, he's a bit of a silver fox

Kevin
EmmaWoodlouse · 02/07/2015 18:25

I know a 1-year-old boy whose middle name is Kevin, but it's after a family member.

It's not really my thing but it's not an awful name, and I don't think a child called that would have any trouble with teasing - I know a few children with similar kinds of slightly dated (not trendy-old-fashioned) names who get on fine with everybody. When I was young I somehow associated it with rather weedy, wimpy boys but I've met enough manly Kevins now to have better associations.

MadHenLady · 02/07/2015 18:32

I don't think it's awful, it's always been popular in Ireland, where I am from

Barry though...my area seems to be in a bit of a name time warp. I know 3 teenage Barrys, a baby Karen, and a few Bernadettes/Bernices under the age of 15

x2boys · 02/07/2015 18:34

my eight yr old son has an eight yr olds friend called jason which i think is a very dated name i,m 41 and i knew a few jasons including my first boyfriend.
