So having been roundly assured that Tess is not an acceptable nn for Elizabeth Grin what is your favourite shortening of:

Elizabeth/Elisabeth
Alexandra

Thanks

Liza (as in Liza Minelli - Lyza)
Lexi

Tess !! (Yes I have read the OP)
One of the most wonderful, beautiful women I've known is called Elisabeth - nn Tess.

Thurlow · 28/06/2015 18:35

Selfishly pleased that Alex has proved so popular Grin

Though if I had my time again, I might have shortened it to Alix instead, as I just like the spelling. And I think it does make the name more clearly feminine (though an entirely unisex name like Alex is endlessly entertaining when you have a small and unidentifiable baby and people ask for the name to try and work out whether its a girl or boy...)

Also considered Elizabeth, but wrote it off as DP preferred Lizzie and I preferred Libby and, like you OP, we knew we'd shorten it.

cosmicglittergirl · 28/06/2015 18:37

Betty

Breadkneadslove · 28/06/2015 18:42

Love both these names as they are... For Alexandra I would use Ra Ra and for Elizabeth I would use Iza/ Isa or Betty / Betsy ooh or maybe Bess.

prepperpig · 28/06/2015 18:46

How is sasha a nn for Alexandra? Confused

IdaShaggim · 28/06/2015 18:50

Bess and Lexa

annatha · 28/06/2015 18:53

I love Elizabeth for how versatile it is- Eliza, Liz, Lizzie, Libby, Beth, Betty, Betsy, Liza... She can swap nicknames as she gets older. I'm not as keen on Alexandra as I don't like Alex for a girl but Allie is sweet.

wonderpants · 28/06/2015 18:54

I knew an Elizabeth who ended up being known as Tizz.
I love Lizzy, I've not come across any little Lizzys! I also love Betsy, but it feels like it has become a name of the time!

annatha · 28/06/2015 18:54

Oh Bess I forgot about that. Also Bessie.

barbecue · 28/06/2015 19:30

Bess and Alex.

MegMurry · 28/06/2015 19:32

Ra Ra? Grin

Seriously?

silverglitterpisser · 28/06/2015 19:36

Beth and Allie.

CSLewis · 28/06/2015 19:42

No-one's said Lily! I have an Elisabeth, and that's what she's called by most people. Occasionally Lisbeth or Lillabub! (In our defence, she's only 4.)

I love Sacha as a nn for Alexander/Alexandra.

NighteyesLovesGingerbread · 28/06/2015 19:49

blossommy I actually think I love you! Tess is back on the table! Grin Elisabeth spelling is definitely an option as we have French heritage which had all the letters for Tess (a weird tick of mine is that NNs should use letters from the longer name)

bread my toddlers would love a sister called RaRa - they are both noisy lion fans!!

is Betsy popular now? I don't 'do' popular if I can help it due to being one of 6 in my class with my name at school!

I do like Alex but I don't know if I feel its a boys name or a girls name - most of the other unisex names (sam, Lesley etc) I have a leaning as to whether I prefer it for a boy or girl - I'm not sure with Alex.

Lizzy or Lizzie...not sure which spelling I like!

Tess is a lovely nickname for Elisabeth. Nell is nice also.

Marymaymay · 28/06/2015 20:11

I'm Allie, short for Alexandra. Wish I was Alex. I soooo look like an Alex but apparently thought it was a boys name when I was little and refused it.

It's a wierd one with Allie, people presume you're an Alison and find it hard to get their heads around the fact that you're an Alexandra once they know!

Oh, my mum is Elizabeth. Liz for short and occasionally affectionately known as Betty.

Sophronia · 28/06/2015 20:16

Beth, Betsy, Lisbet or Liesl, and Alex

BreeVDKamp · 28/06/2015 20:20

Libby and Alexa

Tuesday11 · 28/06/2015 20:21

Beth and Allie - love Allie

Vijac · 28/06/2015 20:23

I love Alexandra and like both Alex, Alexa and lexi. I prefer the full name Elizabeth to its abbreviations.

Purpleflamingos · 28/06/2015 20:25

I love Tess.
But in answer, Beth and Lexi/Alex

drinkscabinet · 28/06/2015 20:31

I like Lexi but I'm Scottish. Family short forms of Alexandra are Allie, Sandy and Alex. All gender neutral as well.

I have a colleague who is still Lizzie so it's perfectly possible to keep the name into adulthood. Elsa is a nice shortening but depends how you feel about Disney.

Breadkneadslove · 28/06/2015 20:34

Not sure about the popularity of Betsy, I'm out the loop as far as popular baby names go but I do know a fabulous forty something woman called Betsy.

I think with a nn anything is useable because it's not their actual name, it is the name that the child is affectionately known as and they can be either pre-determined or evolve naturally once the child arrives!

susurration · 28/06/2015 22:16

Beth or Bess and Lexa or Lexi.
