It's fairly neutral these days, in the UK. I have a research-scientist friend called Jason, he's late 30's/early 40's. There's also a builder character in Coronation Street (v popular soap opera/long running drama series) in his late 20's with the same name,so there's no real"stereotype" attached tp the name at the moment.

FraggleHair · 28/06/2015 04:45

Hello emjam, I understand a lot of Chinese people moving to the UK adopt a Western name and I can imagine it must be hard to choose a name when they're all fresh to you. I wouldn't know where to start if I had to choose a Chinese name.

I would say that even though Jason is an ancient Greek name it's considered very dated in a more 1970s way and is therefore not a popular name for babies born these days. But obviously you're not a baby so the name Jason is probably era appropriate for a 33 year old.

I really don't like it though!

If I was you I'd go for something like Alex (also Greek) or Adam, both good classic names without the dated feel that Jason has.

lolalotta · 28/06/2015 06:04

Jason is dated!

Chips1999 · 28/06/2015 06:32

I think I'd choose something like James instead of Jason, Jason is quite dates to me. I also have a Chinese BIL called Jason...I think it's quite popular for Chinese people Grin

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 28/06/2015 07:09

For a baby, it would seem dated. But for someone in their 30s actually I quite like it. When I was at school I'd have thought anyone called Jason must be really cool (thinking Jason Donovan/Jason Priestley!) so actually, in this situation, I vote yes Grin

downgraded · 28/06/2015 07:14

It's dated for a baby but about right if you're in your thirties.

We have a few little Chinese boys at school with quite dated sounding names to our ears. We've got a Mike, an Ian and a Steve, all in infants!

Makes me Smile

QueefOfTheSporned · 28/06/2015 07:20

I like it. It's perfect for your age group.

Fairylea · 28/06/2015 07:28

I think Jason is very 1980s. Maybe fitting to your age in that case :) (I'm in my 30s too by the way). If you like the "Ja" sound personally I'd go for something more classic like James.

Peanut14 · 28/06/2015 07:30

If you like Jason, go for it, it's a nice name and it's nice that you yourself can choose your own (western) name.

As for the op who claims Ian, Mike & Steve being dated names for babies, what a load of rubbish. I know plenty of children called Mike & Steve.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 28/06/2015 07:33

I don't like it. I'm about the same age as you and disagree it's age appropriate, I don't know a single one my age. I know a few older though (40's).
I would go with something like Tom or Ben or Dan.

Hellolemonade · 28/06/2015 07:50

I don't understand why Chinese people do this. Is there something wrong with your given name? Would it be weird if I moved to China and changed my name to a Chinese one? Jason is absolutely horrible.

Raines100 · 28/06/2015 08:36

I fell in love with a Jason, and now I'm married to him Grin. He's 34, so definitely think it's age appropriate for you.

Cliffdiver · 28/06/2015 08:38

It makes me think of that Only Fools and Horses episode when Del Boy was talking about someone who was gay and said in a camp voice: 'Jason' Grin

getbusyliving · 28/06/2015 09:31

The sound Jason is pleasant enough, but when I imagine a 'Jason' I think of a stocky, tattooed, white van man driver. Nothing wrong with that of course.

Some names that i cannot visualise or stereotype are Harry, James, Alex, William, Tom.

Are you able to say what your real name is? Maybe no need to westernise it? ????

MamaLazarou · 28/06/2015 09:35

I love it.

BadHenry · 28/06/2015 09:53

Its not awful, and it is age appropriate, but it makes me think of Jason Donovan and since you have free choice to pick a brand new name I think there are better choices.

James
Alex
Peter
John
Arthur

All great, classic choices.

Branleuse · 28/06/2015 11:36

i like it. i don't think its dated

TheHumblePotato · 28/06/2015 12:05

I think it's slightly dated and reminds me of a lot of characters from soaps but of course not everyone would share a similar association. I'd second BadHenry's choices r.e. classical choices like James.
Perhaps even
Thomas
William
Lucas

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/06/2015 12:21

I think of it as an ancient Greek name (eg Jason and The Argonauts) I like it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2015 12:24

Sound a bit dated to my ear but I like JaySmile

Angelto5 · 28/06/2015 12:37

I'm also married to a Jason (late 30's) & he hates it as it's very dated (1970's).

He much prefers being called jay (I only usually call him Jason when he's annoying me Grin )

But if you like the name,go for it!Smile

Also I think Michael is a timeless name - our 16 year old son is a Michael & know many others of different ages!

WorktoLive · 28/06/2015 12:38

You're asking in the wrong place OP. People on here have very strong views on names that are a lot less common in real life.

It's fine and lots of men your age are called Jason.

I assume that you have thought this through in that it doesn't mean anything silly or offensive in Chinese and it is easily pronouncable to Chinese speakers?

getbusyliving · 28/06/2015 13:15

@worktolive of course the name is fine and that's what most would say in RL. I believe the OP is trying to get a 'feel' for the name as in what connotations people have etc... That's why a name forum is probably one of the better places to seek opinion as a wide range will be achieved.

getbusyliving · 28/06/2015 13:19

Incidentally i wouldn't use a name forum when naming my child, because I know what I like and would be aware of most connotations.

As a Chinese person choosing a Westernised name this forum does have it's benefits

SylvaniansAtEase · 28/06/2015 13:39

It's a bit dated, and in some areas of the country would be seen as a lower class name, simply because it was one of those names which is associated with a certain time - it was very popular in the 1970s, and has not been popular since. So, although it is an ancient name, it is not a 'classic' name in the UK.

However, it's nice, easy to pronounce and not associated strongly with a particular celebrity or a joke or anything!

If you list your preferences and the type of name you are looking for, I'm sure people on here could make some good suggestions. FWIW I agree that if you wanted a classic UK name with no particular associations, James is ideal, perhaps better than Jason.
