Lighthearted!

Rowan always gets a positive response on here and is suggested a lot.

I don't like it. I think it looks feminine (I know it can go either way) and it makes me think of Mr Bean!

Fleur. This has such a horrible sound!

Genevieve. I think this looks like a disease!

What are yours?

MonstrousRatbag I hate all that High Court Judge nonsense too and am delighted your investigations found judges called Keith, Gary and Sonia!

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/06/2015 20:38

And how could I forget Harriet!

Bluepetra · 15/06/2015 21:00

Carlton... No, just no.

BeginnerSAHM · 15/06/2015 21:04

Oh - nasty thread.... Hmm

marshmallowpies · 15/06/2015 21:05

Harriet is my middle name and I've always preferred it to my first name, I'll always be a flag waver for Harriet.

No idea why my parents picked it, my brother has a traditional family name as a middle name and my first name I know why my mum liked (an old friend, and also a favourite character in a book she loves), but they seem to have plucked Harriet out of thin air. I asked my mum where they got the idea from and she seemed very vague about it all!

AmysTiara · 15/06/2015 21:12

Elizabeth. I think it's a ugly sounding name bit it always gets a good reception on here.

I don't get the love for Luna and William either.

ditavonteesed · 15/06/2015 21:19

rude

Rockytoptennessee · 15/06/2015 22:20

Cheerfulyank Persephone is pronounced the same in the UK, 'per-SEFF-a-nee'.

Strokethefurrywall · 15/06/2015 22:53

Hahaha, my cousin is Carlton and is a family name, handed down from my grandpa. Lots of the boys in my family have it and I wanted it for DS1 but DH's thick Scottish accent out paid to that. Which is why DS1 is Carter instead.
It reminds me if my family which is why I love it. But of course a person's perceptions of the connotations behind the name is what builds our "like" or "dislike".
If you get worked up by faceless ransoms on the Internet disliking your name then you need to grow a thicker skin.

KERALA1 · 15/06/2015 23:01

Soppy toddler names - daisy, poppy, Millie these are fine for curly headed 3 year olds daft for adult women.

FixItUpChappie · 15/06/2015 23:04

I agree with Mitzy - I don't like the Edwardian names on the whole.

Off the top of my head I also don't care for Tabitha or Jemima which I see on here a lot.

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/06/2015 23:16

Excellent, DD2's name is universally loathed. That means it's not going to be too popular then. Jolly good. Grin

avocadotoast · 16/06/2015 00:35

Arlo & Ottilie. They just sound...off to me.

Maybe because I know I'd sound fucking ridiculous shouting them out in the parks round where I live Grin

ch1134 · 16/06/2015 01:22

Tabitha, Felicity, Annabelle.

CheerfulYank · 16/06/2015 03:23

Oh I love Harriet! When I was little I thought it was the ugliest name in the world. Now I think it's fantastic.

I know a girl whose grandmothers were both called Harriet. Her parents wanted to name her after them. She's Teirrah. Yes really. :o Lovely girl!

Dampandrotten · 16/06/2015 08:19

Does anyone else worry that their tastes have been affected by reading these forums?

FernGullysWoollyPully · 16/06/2015 08:29

Has Gideon cropped up yet?

I'm sure I've seen it on here.

Ridiculous, looks a bit like pigeon.

Queazy · 16/06/2015 08:30

Yes dampandrotten. I find myself worrying that classics like Ben and Emma are 'boring' whilst entertaining the idea of having dc's called Romilly and Anastasia etc. Such names would never have entered my head before. Not sure if a good thing or not, but at times think I'm heading for 'unusual' and 'quirky' rather than names I actually like!!!

BarryGoosey · 16/06/2015 08:34

Yes Damp! When my SIL announced they were calling their DS Kai I recoiled in horror! SIL is not a MNetter so had no idea that she had doomed her beautiful baby to a life of general "chaviness" and had ruined all chances of him becoming a High Court Judge Shock

See that's the thing isn't it! Its NICE to have different tastes.

If you get worked up by faceless ransoms on the Internet disliking your name then you need to grow a thicker skin.
Indeed. You may have to deal with them in real life too... Though in truth, people do this shocked look, then politely go that's an unusual/different name with a face that looks like it just swallowed a lemon flavoured wasp. DS name is definitely marmite. Loads of people do genuinely love it too.

Does anyone else worry that their tastes have been affected by reading these forums?
Not really. I think it makes me happier about my own choice and more confident in it. I do find it interesting reading that the options we didn't choose tend to be more popular than I thought they would be, which in turn does make you feel like you belong and if anything, that our unusual choice perhaps will appeal to more tastes than MN might reflect.

There is always going to be someone who doesn't like your choice. Just in the same way that no one ever likes the same music. The trouble is if you take it too personally.

Legionofboom · 16/06/2015 08:51

It makes me laugh. All this angst about the 'high court judge test' and which nicknames are ok to use.

It's all so middle class to care.

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/06/2015 08:51

Oh, and DD1's name is now putting in a strong showing. Job done, I think.

Spot on, RedToothBrush. Don't care what other people think. We didn't set out to have deliberately unique names, we just wanted something a bit different that people would be able to pronounce and spell, and something that wasn't going to date them.

tinymeteor · 16/06/2015 09:36

I know a Romilly and an Arlo IRL and they are both delightful, so on behalf of their mums: bog off Mumsnet Grin
