Lighthearted!

Rowan always gets a positive response on here and is suggested a lot.

I don't like it. I think it looks feminine (I know it can go either way) and it makes me think of Mr Bean!

Fleur. This has such a horrible sound!

Genevieve. I think this looks like a disease!

What are yours?

Nancy and Audrey. I normally like old fashioned 1950s school story type names. But I hate those, and they seem to be very popular on here.

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2015 12:43

Purs e phony well that is just ridiculous

myneighbourtotoro2 · 15/06/2015 12:48

Verity , Reuben . I really dislike them for no real reason

Mummyofonesofar · 15/06/2015 12:59

My Ds' name isn't here but names that I like for any future child are!

I don't like really pretentious names - Winifred, double barrelled names - Lily-May, chavvy names - Lexy or ones with those with stupid spellings like Emmalee - the child then has to tell every person how to spell their "unique" name. Dog names bleugh! Old women/man names - therefore any relative name is out the window. I can't imagine calling a child Charles - especially if you're going to shorten it anyway! Why pick a name for the birth certificate if you're not going to use it?!

bostonbaby · 15/06/2015 13:16

Old biddy names, already been listed but George, Charlie and Jack take the prize. Make me feel a bit nauseous tbh.
Also chavvy names like Lexi and Kayden, that sort of thing. Bleurgghh

marshmallowpies · 15/06/2015 13:22

My DD2's name is not particularly trendy right now - nowhere near top 100 - and I don't see it recommended on MN much but it's come up several times on this thread! I had no idea it was a 'MN' name nor that it was so disliked!

It wasn't a name I was totally in love with, more the case it was the name DH and I could agree on, so I don't feel offended so many dislike it, just surprised! We've had no raised eyebrows or strange looks when we've told people her name.

afink · 15/06/2015 13:30

Ottilie, Romilly, Mabel. All awful.

MonstrousRatbag · 15/06/2015 13:32

The High Court Judge test makes me laugh. I've just looked up the current High Court judges and I think MNers are a bit out of date (or snobby) with what they consider to be an appropriate HCJ name. I found lots of very conventional Andrews and Richards and Carolines and Sarahs, but also:

Duncan
Roderic (without a 'k')
Brian
Vivian
Ross
Gary
Keith
Clive
Robin
Bernard

as well as:

Beverley
Lucy
Ingrid
Maura
Vivien
Sue and
Sonia.

marshmallowpies · 15/06/2015 13:38

RedToothbrush we rejected a few top 10 names as DH's surname is very common (like smith or Jones) so I would allow 'too popular' as a valid reason for not using a name.

There were plenty I like that didn't sound right with his surname, or had a negative association for us. (Eg name of an ex or something like that!). It does feel a bit like 'passing on' a good name - 'I couldn't use this but you might like it'.

TheFillyjonk · 15/06/2015 13:40

Otto. I just think of a rosy-cheeked Bavarian in Lederhosen.

mathanxiety · 15/06/2015 15:47

Verity and Marnie, yy.

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2015 16:13

High court judge sue i love that maybe the aspirational would like to think their children will be high court judges Wink

WankerDeAsalWipe · 15/06/2015 16:23

Seren (just because it isn't a nice sound)
Aurelia (reminds me of nipples)
Aurora (dog chewing a toffee)
Penelope (I actually don't mind Penny as coin related names go but hate Penelope Pitstop )
Antigone nn Tiggy (Tiggy isn't too bad but the rest sounds like a backwards wart cream)

Rupert (why? Just why?)
Kit (used to quite like this but since coming on here and seeing it suggested in most threads, now sounds twattish.
Ted (see Kit)

CarrotVan · 15/06/2015 16:37

Arlo is a character in Justified

A few months ago every baby name thread had someone suggesting Wreford which sounds like a commuter town in the Home Counties. Never understood that one

I am not a fan of name-mae versions.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 15/06/2015 17:10

Atticus is the one that sprung straight to mind but there'll be tons more

wigglesrock · 15/06/2015 18:26

Penelope - I just don't get the love for it - it's very I don't know - cumbersome, smug, wordy

wesH · 15/06/2015 18:31

Ottilie. Vile name.

honeyandfizz · 15/06/2015 18:33

Edith or Edie - ugly granny names imo. Can't understand why they are so popular now.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/06/2015 19:20

Another thumbs down for Ottilie to me it sounds like Natalie gone wrong.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 15/06/2015 19:37

"Names you don't like" will never be "lighthearted" will it, OP?

I think all y'all need to get over yourselves with the Name Hate.

Shakespeare said it best.

Queazy · 15/06/2015 19:58

Just read suggestions for Peregrin and Boris on another thread. Really?! Each to their own, but I've never met anyone called these names, and they're just not even 'unusual and cool' imo. Sorry if offends anyone. I know my own dad's name is a little marmite xx

ScrewFix · 15/06/2015 20:00

'Posh boy' names. They're so LOVED on MN, but in my world, boys called Barnaby or Rupert get pitying looks.

poppetina · 15/06/2015 20:02

Not sure why I read this thread, I knew my DD's name was a 'loved by mumsnet' one and it has been ripped to shreds. I had no idea people would really hate it, although I knew it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. DS has escaped though, he has a much more boring name. Fwiw I think it suits her.

CheerfulYank · 15/06/2015 20:10

In the US Persephone is "Per-SEFF-a-nee", not purse a phony.

I don't like Rueben. To me it is the name of an Appalachian kid in overalls and bare feet who started smoking at the age of ten. :o Also Sonny. I was Shock the first time I saw that on MN...I can't think of a more redneck name!

But some people probably think my boy's names (Sam and Will) are boring, and my daughter's already been mentioned as a " 50 year old woman." :o

MitzyLeFrouf · 15/06/2015 20:33

Dreadful Edwardian offerings like Ethel and Wilfred. Just such unappealing names.
