Baby name near-misses

What baby names did you "just HAVE to" use when you were pregnant that you were talked out of, and realise now are awful?

I was desperate to name DS Sirius, or to at least use it as a middle name, when I was pregnant. At the time, I was really upset that DH wouldn't even consider it and instead, every time I brought it up, would reply "Sirius-ly?". I'm so just relieved that I didn't tell anyone else this was the name I wanted to use so didn't have to face a load of Hmm faces! Grin

My pre - born names were in no way out there and I still like them. They were Jackson, Alyssa and Poppy. But when I tell my kids what they could have been called they think it is really funny because they are their chosen names, which are more classic, and a bit boring maybe but I love their chosen names Smile

dimdommilpot · 10/06/2015 21:43

DD2 was going to be Elsa, Frozen became huge just before she was born. I still love the name but just couldnt use it.

LynetteScavo · 10/06/2015 21:43

Amadeus for DS1.

Glad I didn't, as there was one a few years below him in primary school, and there's no point having an unusual name if it's not actually unusual.

Talulah for DD. It would have suited her.

MamaLazarou · 10/06/2015 21:45

I was desperate to call DS Ventura. I still think it is a wonderful name. DH laughed and laughed.

Iwillorderthefood · 10/06/2015 21:46

I love Imogen.

DH wanted Priya, I knows it's popular, and very pronounceable, and would have worked for our mixed heritage family, but I just did not like it, mainly because there is a convenience store of the same name nearby. It just seemed wrong for us.

I wanted a Queenie but had DSs.

MamaLazarou · 10/06/2015 21:51

I suggested Prudence for a girl. WTF was I thinking? I've see Kath & Kim as well.

Lunastarfish · 10/06/2015 21:55

My cousin was going to be called Britney. Luckily she wasn't as Britney Spears released her first sing a few months later - a lucky escape!

wigglylines · 10/06/2015 21:58

If I'd had a boy about 5 years earlier I would have wanted to call him Spike.

MeDented · 10/06/2015 21:58

I wanted Spike for DS but DH just thought it was a joke!

CityDweller · 10/06/2015 22:00

Apparently I was going to be called Wilkie if I was a boy. According to my attention-seeking dad. I got off very lightly in comparison.

An old friend of mine was nearly called Merlin. Which I secretly think is kind of awesome

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 10/06/2015 22:00

My DD is Isla and I am disappointed in how it's rocketed in popularity.

I wouldn't have had any of our dc names bar one (also mentioned on here, I have a Sebastian) as dh vetoed them. I did also want Faith for a girl which didn't go down well either. I still like it.

Kraggle · 10/06/2015 22:13

On my girls list was Mabel and Maybelle.

Dd has a lovely normal but not overly popular name now and I can't believe I ever considered the others!

ThreeFrazzledFandangos · 10/06/2015 23:36

We'd agreed on Isabelle for a DD, nan Izzy. This was decided years ago, way before the twilight thing took off.

Both of us still think it's a gorgeous, classic name but it wasn't until I took DS to baby groups that I realised just how many there are in this area.

There were 5 in one group of 20 babies. They were all known as Isabelle smith, Isabelle Brown, Isabelle Jones, etc.

I still love it though!

drinkscabinet · 10/06/2015 23:44

DD2 was almost Elsa. We made the mistake of telling her this (she's a Frozen obsessed 5 year old), she has not forgiven us!

DS1 and 2 were going to be Clementine, by the time Dd2 arrived the name seemed stale so I never did use it.

CatOfTheForest · 11/06/2015 00:33

OP I also fancied Sirius! But couldn't get over it sounding like "Serious". Also:
Newton
Galileo
Wolf...

When I was younger I always loved Eve, and no one was called it then, so I congratulated myself on my cool & original baby name idea. By the time I got round to getting pregnant, every small child I met seemed to be called Eve and I was totally fed up with it.

Quasilulu · 11/06/2015 01:43

DS would have been Fenella. Still love/dislike it depending which way the wind blows!

Want2bSupermum · 11/06/2015 02:17

There is a larger family in town. Their DD3 is called Anna and DD4 is Elsa. She is pregnant with her fifth and I can't wait to hear what they name the child once it's born.

TheNewStatesman · 11/06/2015 03:01

I was all for calling my daughter "Adela" until I was told that it sounds like a popular brand of wigs here in Japan where I live.

I am quite glad I didn't call her Isla because it is lovely but all over the place right now.

Fishlaar · 11/06/2015 03:05

DH wanted to name our DD2 Gazarla. To this day I don't know if he was joking or not.

OwlAtEase · 11/06/2015 03:13

Rainbow.

I was on my way to hospital for the induction, and saw a rainbow. DH and I had not yet agreed on a name for DD.

Me: Ooooo look a rainbow! We could call her rainbow! I think it's a sign!
Sensible husband: Nope. No. No way.

I blame the induction anxiety.

avocadotoast · 11/06/2015 03:40

I wanted Remus had DD been a boy. I think DH would have agreed to it as a middle name though...
