Che

DH is set on the name Che for a boy, I don't hate it but I'm not that keen on it either. We can't even agree on the pronunciation! I say it with a hard 'ch' sound e.g. chair, cheese and DH with a soft 'sh' e.g. Shay.

I could probably learn to live with it, maybe even like it but which pronunciation is correct? Help please!

Do you like shai? pronounced shy?

You would seriously suggest calling a British child "Shy"? Confused

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 01/06/2015 13:19

He needs a puppy or kitten to call Che-with-a-sh then you can both work on a sensible name for a son Smile

LolaDrinksCola · 01/06/2015 13:19

Aww Jesus! So it would! Chez Carl! Ffs Grin

Vixx I suggested that ( Shay ) but nope, wants the Che spelling.

Soup, he hasn't really made any, said he likes Amanda and Estelle but he didn't come up with them, I was reading names out the book.

Shai is just as bad. Shai le boeuf. That twatty Transformers actor. Nope.

RiverTam · 01/06/2015 13:21

I never knew it should be with a hard 'ch', I always thought it was 'shay'. Well, you learn something new every day.

I'm interested to know how Carl is difficult to pronounce, though.

LolaDrinksCola · 01/06/2015 13:24

Glitz because he is twisted?

Now he is arguing with me over the pronunciation of Chez, says it's a hard CH! I am starting to think he's pulling my bloody leg!

OP posts:
LolaDrinksCola · 01/06/2015 13:27

RiverTam it's my accent I think, I can't say 'rl' unless I try REALLY hard so Carl is Carol, Pearl is Peril, and so on.

GladysTheGolem · 01/06/2015 13:28

Shay like Shay Given an option?

SoupDragon · 01/06/2015 13:28

He must be!

Perhaps he is pushing for Chez Carl so you are so relieved at the name he really wants that you let him have it in relief.

LolaDrinksCola · 01/06/2015 13:39

Well, I think he's definitely taking the mickey with the Chez pronunciation but I do believe he actually wants Che with a Sh.

I feel for the sake of my future maybe son that I must break my oath re letting him have carte blanche on this baby's name.

I will tell him he can name the next baby. And then I will get a coil fitted. Grin

Thing is, there's a difference between 'didn't have much input' into a name - which sounds like he chose to do - and 'pushing for a name which the other person doesn't like and is totally ridiculous '

Presumably, if you'd wanted to call your DD Krystyll Klaire or similar and he had objected, you would have respected his views, yes? But you presumably went with a name he found acceptable, even if it wasn't his idea or choice, so fine.

Same needs to happen here. You can't have a name the other parent 'might be able to learn to live with'. That's awful. And so is Chez Carl.

Make him do a top twenty, you do the same, and start again.

florascotia · 01/06/2015 14:27

OP - there is an old Irish name Se (with a forward-sloping accent on the e) that is pronounced Shay. It is the origin of Irish surnames such as O'Shea (pronounced O'Shay). It means something such as 'like a hawk'.

If your husband comes from Liverpool, that is a place with many traditional links to Ireland. Is he perhaps thinking of that surname and getting a wee bit muddled over the spelling?

Chay is also a short form of the name Charles (as in the Scottish transatlantic sailor, Chay Blyth). Carl is a German form of Charles. So 'Che (pronounced Chay) Carl' would be like calling a baby 'Charles Charles'.

Have you come across the Forvo website? It has sound clips of people speaking words in their own native languages.
Here, so your DH can listen, is how 27 French people say 'chez':
www.forvo.com/search/chez/fr/

They can't all be wrong!

Whiteshirt · 01/06/2015 14:59

Suggest 'Shay', which is a not very nice Irish name, pronounced the way he seems to want Che to be pronounced?

There used to be a tacky Cuban-Irish pub in Prague called O'Che's...

MamaLazarou · 01/06/2015 16:41

I knew a guy called Che and EVERYONE called him Shane until he corrected them.

CheekyBanana · 01/06/2015 16:49

Just throwing another spelling in the mix. I know someone with this name, spelt Chie (with a horizontal accent over the e). She is almost a pensioner. Oldest person I've heard if with this shay / shae sounding name. Males I've heard with said name are significantly younger. Oldest being mid 30s. Love name for females.

BabyBNumberThree · 01/06/2015 17:00

my dog is called Che pronounced Shay so it's a no for a baby name for me!

fourchetteoff · 01/06/2015 17:03

I have a friend who has a 10YO DS called Shay. They seem pretty happy with the choice, even after it became a 'whores name' on Game of Thrones Grin.

BTW - your DH has a poor taste in names. What are your choices?

I know a Che (pronounced like Che Guevara). In his case it is a nickname for Charles. Could that be an option?

SkodaLabia · 01/06/2015 17:58

I've just tried to pronounce Carl in a way that doesn't sound like, well, Carl, and I think I've hurt myself. Grin

LolaDrinksCola · 01/06/2015 18:23

Thank you everyone for replying.

Skoda try saying it with a Scottish accent Grin

Four DH only has good taste when it comes to women. Everything else is questionable. I like the names Keir, Owen/Ewan and Alex. For a girl I like Amanda (family connection) Estelle and Lorna.

BeautifulRedBoots · 01/06/2015 18:29

I used to have a friend called Chey, pronounced Shay... Think he told me it was a combination of Che (Guavara) and Chay (Blyth)...

MamaLazarou · 01/06/2015 19:37

Keir is awesome.

switchitoff · 01/06/2015 19:47

I know a boy called Che, pronounced Shay; but TBH it doesn't look or sound right to me. Che looks like something is missing off the end - as if it isn't finished. What about Shane or Sean as alternatives?
