Have heard a lot of people shouting Reeeuuuuben!!! after naughty boys recently.

ByronBaby · 23/05/2015 23:41

Callum - naughty
Reuben - clever

GiddyOnZackHunt · 23/05/2015 23:49

Based on the boys I know with those names:
Callum - a bit full of themselves either socially or physically.
Reuben - decent boy. Not so sure about the mum!

VanillaTwirl · 24/05/2015 00:25

Callum: have only met lovely Callums, so the 'shaven haired, filthy, chav, horrid' comments are a bit Shockand Hmm. Some quite nasty assumptions all from a name alone.

Reuben is quite popular at the mo, but I know a couple of nice Reubens too.

FatAli · 24/05/2015 00:30

Callum - naughty boy (ime)

Reuben - Jewish colleague

anotherdayanothername1 · 24/05/2015 00:51

Callum - parents' have no taste

Reuben - parents think they have taste

shitebag · 24/05/2015 01:08

Callum - I like it and would've possibly used it for DS had my ex not been called it.

Reuben - Its a bit of a 'meh' name to me, I don't like it but don't hate it.

FWIW I hate it when people pile in saying they taught/know/babysat an X and they were all chavvy/horrid/rude children, no they bloody werent it's a massive preconception through ignorance which leads to an automatic dislike of that individual. I've worked with children for 12 years now and yes there are a few children who share names and act up a bit but that has nothing to do with what they are called!

mrstweefromtweesville · 24/05/2015 01:45

I like both names.

NinjaLeprechaun · 24/05/2015 03:47

Apparently there's a sandwich called a Reuben - pastrami/some kind of beef, pickles, cheese, salad leaves, mustard. Something like that.
Corned beef (proper corned beef, not that tinned stuff), sauerkraut, cheese, dressing (mustard?). Grilled and/or served warm. Best sandwich ever. There is apparently a variant with pastrami, which is just corned beef that's been smoked, but it's not the usual.
It's what I think of when I hear Reuben as well.

I like the name Callum, but it does remind me of somebody I knew who was vaguely annoying. Which would keep me from using it but, obviously, shouldn't influence anybody else.

DamsonInDistress · 24/05/2015 07:32

There are indeed some truly tasteless people on this thread anotherday and is not the parents of Callum's, like me, either...

MamaLazarou · 24/05/2015 08:58

Shitebag: we were asked for our preconceptions of the names.

MrsPresley · 24/05/2015 09:07

I like Callum.

Not keen on Rueben, don't know why though.

SoupDragon · 24/05/2015 09:09

LOL. DS1 is a Callum. He is pretty much the perfect child - polite, well mannered, well behaved, kind... Its not just me being biased, everyone says it and all his school reports agree.

DS2 OTOH... I would say he went along way to establishing his name as a Naughty Boy Name whilst at primary school :o even I hear the name now and think "challenging"

Mrsjayy · 24/05/2015 09:17

Cant move where i live for callums from boys to men

Ive no opinion on Reuben sounds a bit posh

Mrsjayy · 24/05/2015 09:19

Dd1 had 6 callums in her primary school years bet it doubled in secondary 1 of the boys still goes by the name Callum M Grin

sweetpeame · 24/05/2015 12:19

Callum - naughty
Reuben - middle class, possibly Jewish (really like the name btw!)

DorothyCom · 24/05/2015 13:46

Callum is my lovely gentle 20 year old DS who was never in trouble at school and is now studying law at university. He was one of only 2 Callums in a secondary school of over 1100 in Yorkshire.

I have never met a Reuben of any age but I imagine there are good ones and "naughty" ones, rich ones and poor ones. And hopefully ones who have the sense not to make judgements about others based on what their parents chose to name them Grin.

Marcipex · 24/05/2015 13:53

Callum... Unbelievably wet. Ime.
Reuben... Noisy, boisterous, mostly called Ruby.

BabyGanoush · 24/05/2015 13:57

Id think: from a left leaning "worthy" middle class family, possibly highly educated eco-vegetarians as parents

SoupDragon · 24/05/2015 13:58

I find it really interesting how we attach immediate feelings to a name.

I've never come across a Callum who is anything other than lovely so that's how I view the name" as I said, I now associate DS2s name with "challenging" and DDs with "diva" :) there are certainly other names I have preconceived ideas about too.

CaTsMaMmA · 24/05/2015 13:59

Callum...genuine sturdy scottish name, but suits all sorts

Reuben...my idiot cat. I do a lot of shouting after him. Especially this morning when he fetched in a live bird.

BreconBeBuggered · 24/05/2015 14:03

I don't do preconceptions about children so much as their parents when it comes to names, but I couldn't resist coming on to the thread to say that it's Calum Best. Not Callum.

I have no idea whether that makes a difference.

Purpleflamingos · 24/05/2015 14:07

Callum - lovely. Yes in general they can be naughty (years 5-9 were the worst), but the adult/teen ones I know have turned into grafters with a good sense of loyalty towards their friends especially during tough periods and a brilliant sense of humour.
Reuben - currently bring shouted across parks where I live so not a favourite.
