Brynn for a girl?

onceuponavino · 20/05/2015 13:03

What do people thin of Brynn? Will either be Brynn Elizbath or Brynn Alana.

I have heard it a few times on American tv shows or in films, so I definitely think it's more common there! But I really really like it and would be interested in some input :)

Uncle Bryn would be most bamboozled.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 20/05/2015 15:22

Bronwen or Brianna are better options imo

lemonpoppyseed · 20/05/2015 15:24

I have taught a girl called Bryn. It suited her perfectly. I am in N America though, so no associations with beefy Welsh singers...

NobleLocks · 20/05/2015 16:29

I actually really like it

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2015 17:03

Why is it OK to give girls boys's names and not the other way round?

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/05/2015 17:04

I've asked that before. No one seems to have an answer.

Girls called James = fine, boys called Isabelle = less fine it seems.

SecretNutellaFix · 20/05/2015 17:06

Bryn for a girl?

Please don't.

It means "hill" in Welsh by the way.

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2015 17:08

And even worse than that, once a name that was a boy's name becomes associated with girls, people don't use it for boys any more- it becomes devalued.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/05/2015 17:10

It looks like a misspelling of Bryn - a Welsh boys' name

If I saw it, I would think that (a) they've give the baby a boys' name and (b) they've misspelled it. Both of these thoughts would be accompanied by Bryn Terfall singing Bread of Heaven in my head

I think the American fashion of giving girls boys names which are usually of celtic derivation is just awful. Sorry.

BertrandRussell · 20/05/2015 17:11

I bet there are a few Americans who have heard of Bryn Terfel. Frasier and Niles Crane for two.........Grin

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/05/2015 17:12

Sorry Terfel

onceuponavino · 20/05/2015 18:48

oh dear seems like it's a big no!
Definitely seems it would go down better in the States. I also like Ryan for a girl but again .. very "USA"
thanks for the input everyone :)

I can't hear Bryn without hearing 'it means hill in welsh'

airedailleurs · 20/05/2015 18:52

I think it's really pretty and unusual, how about Brynne to make it clear it's a girl's name?

SylvaniansAtEase · 20/05/2015 19:06

Oh nooooo.

It's a Welsh boy's name spelled wrongly, as everyone has said, and very very American - which is fine if you're American in America I think, but here - it just sounds naff.

How about Bryony? Now that's lovely.

maggiethemagpie · 20/05/2015 19:31

I knew a female Brynn once. She was irish.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/05/2015 07:22

Calling a girl Bryn(n)is to me akin to calling a girl David (or Davide to feminise it slightly), I don't care how popular it is in America.

I assume the popularity of Bryn as a girls name took off due to Bryn Mawr, a famous all girl college there.

Are there any other names you like?

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/05/2015 07:35

Meredith is a Welsh boy's name that became a girls name in the US... Most non-welsh people have no idea because that's not well known outside of Wales (though I reckon Bryn is more well known as a Welsh male name) either way hill is a very unisex meaning so I don't see why it couldn't be used for a girl. (sorry Welsh people!)

DirectorOfBetter · 21/05/2015 07:41

There are Welsh names that can be used for boys and girls but Bryn isn't one of them.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/05/2015 07:44

Most names have fairly ambiguous meanings and yet you don't see people rushing out to call their daughters Derek or their sons Laura.

321zerobaby · 21/05/2015 07:45

Makes me think of Gavin and Stacey too.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/05/2015 07:47

If they're going to he the piss taken out of then for being called Derek/Laura then of course you wouldn't. Depending on where you lived you might get away with Bryn, obviously it works in America!

Mehitabel6 · 21/05/2015 07:50

No! Bryony is much better.

Cherriesandapples · 21/05/2015 07:55

You would call your little girl "hill" and after a thousand houses and place names in Wales???? Hill for a boy is great, strong and immovable but totally wrong for a girl.

Dreamiesrcatopium · 21/05/2015 07:57

I really like it! Love Bryony as I know a very lovely one so biased.
