I've asked this before. Probably a lot. Blush But I want a number to point to as far as yay or nay.

I'm to be induced with #3 on Monday morning. (And I'm really nervous, which is probably why I'm starting this thread...I want to focus on something!)

Big brother is Samuel (Sam) and big sister is Margaret (Maggie). My favorite boy's name (he is definitely a boy :)) is Jack. I've always loved it and it's not nearly so popular in my part of the States. However...

Our surname is Brick.

So, once and for all time, I put it to a final yes or no vote. Is "Jack Brick" too abrupt sounding?

I like it. Also don't let mn decide - great as we are, obviously, you're giving birth, so you get to choose!

Ham69 · 16/05/2015 23:17

I can't see a problem with Jack Brick. A good solid name to me. It's easy to over analyse any name. Good luck, op.

CheerfulYank · 16/05/2015 23:23

:o I know Jack Dawson is the Titanic guy of course, but no one his age will!

I do like Dawson but (being American) there are so many surnamey boy's names around...Sawyer, Hudson, Cooper...it feels like it fits too closely with that and I don't like that "vibe" with my other two. Iyswim. Sorry for being difficult! Blush

I don't know if I'll ever name another baby.

Jackson Oliver Brick
Perfect

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/05/2015 00:23

I prefer plain old Jack to Jackson. And if he's going to be known day to day as Jack, what's the point?

Bettercallsaul1 · 17/05/2015 00:26

I think the two monosyllables ending in "ck" are too jarring as well - it's not a name that "flows". A two or three-syllable first name would be better if you can find one you really like. (Not Roderick! Grin)

How exciting Cheerful Flowers

I was induced, I remember the fear, but honestly it was fine. Don't worry!

I like William Brick best.

DH was vehemently opposed to Jack but has now said I can call him whatever I like. Arghhh!

Why not call him John and use the nickname Jack? John Dawson Brick.

YellowLemons · 17/05/2015 22:27

Oliver Dawson Brick Wink
Sorry to throw another one in!

Good luck Cheerful Yank, can't believe you're almost there!

Heebiejeebie · 17/05/2015 22:30

Really sorry to say this but jack brick makes me think of jack shit.

FatWalda · 17/05/2015 22:36

Yes, I think John is a great compromise all round. John Brick doesn't have that hard staccato sound. And John is currently quite uncommon, but not of course weird! You can still call him Jack, becuse it's the traditional nn for John, but he has a choice too.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 17/05/2015 23:40

I have a Jack (born just before the surge in popularity in the UK), and still love the name all these years later.

Said with an American accent, Jack Brick sounds absolutely fine. Granted, with some British accents it might sound abrupt, but still not enough to put me off using it.

I really like the suggestion of Jackson too. I have never shortened my Jack's name (I suppose it would have to be J), but often call him Jackson. Because he is Jack & my son Grin.

I couldn't use Jack Dawson though. Way too Titanic.

CheerfulYank · 18/05/2015 00:34

I do like John quite a bit but DH has a crazy uncle John and a narcissistic cousin John so that's out :(

FatWalda · 18/05/2015 00:59

How about Jonathan then?

Bettercallsaul1 · 18/05/2015 08:57

That's a good suggestion. I really like Jonathan and it goes really well with Brick. The three syllables balance the short second name and there are no harsh sounds in it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/05/2015 11:50

Definitely not Jonathan.

pilates · 18/05/2015 12:19

Thumbs up for Jack, one of my favourite names for a boy.

Bettercallsaul1 · 18/05/2015 12:51

Grin Ah, the joys of asking for advice on MN! Quicker just to toss a coin, Cheerful - Jack or not Jack!

BikeRunSki · 18/05/2015 12:56

I thought Jack was a nn for James actually - like in Jacobean meaning "in the time of King James", but no matter, all I really wanted to say was whoa Cheerful he's coming today???!!!! wow and good luck!!!!

mathanxiety · 18/05/2015 17:47

Good luck Cheerful Flowers. Very exciting day for you. Hope all is going well.

I love the sound of Oliver Dawson Brick.

I think Jack Brick would be nice. It wouldn't work if it was Jack Brack. But I think Oliver sounds nicer with Brick all the same. And Olly too. What would put me off about William is Bill or Billy Brick. Will is nice, and William without any abbreviation, but Sam and Maggie are abbreviations so that might not be possible.

hawkmcqueen · 18/05/2015 18:35

As above, good luck! And please do tell us your beautiful son's name when you have decided, so exciting!!

CheerfulYank · 18/05/2015 18:36

In labor over here if you'd like to stop by :)
