I've asked this before. Probably a lot. Blush But I want a number to point to as far as yay or nay.

I'm to be induced with #3 on Monday morning. (And I'm really nervous, which is probably why I'm starting this thread...I want to focus on something!)

Big brother is Samuel (Sam) and big sister is Margaret (Maggie). My favorite boy's name (he is definitely a boy :)) is Jack. I've always loved it and it's not nearly so popular in my part of the States. However...

Our surname is Brick.

So, once and for all time, I put it to a final yes or no vote. Is "Jack Brick" too abrupt sounding?

Personally I think Jack Brick sounds better than Will Brick. Will Brick sounds like Wilbrick.

hawkmcqueen · 16/05/2015 18:48

No to Jack Brick, I would raise an eyebrow and think really? But here's my solution!

JACKSON BRICK!!

Will Brick is too 'matchy'. As someone said up thread Sam Brick sounds good because the softer name takes the focus off the abrupt surname. Whereas both Jack and Will accentuate it.

I would choose a soft first name, with two syllables.

hawkmcqueen · 16/05/2015 18:49

And good luck! Star

CaptainAnkles · 16/05/2015 18:49

Jack is a lovely name but no, it really doesn't go with your last name.

Koalafications · 16/05/2015 18:52

William Brick is lovely, Cheerful.

Chillycamper · 16/05/2015 18:52

What about John or Jonathan Brick with Jack as nn?

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2015 18:53

There is an American professional tennis player called Jack Sock, which is similar in sound to Jack Brick, and works perfectly well for him.

I say go for it Smile

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 16/05/2015 19:11

Wow. Cheerful is your bAby due already. It only seems like a few weeks ago that you were announcing your pregnancy.
I wouldn't put Jack with Brick if I'm honest. It's too abrupt sounding if I'm honest especially with them both ending in the same letter. They're also not far off rhyming either.
What other names do you have.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 16/05/2015 19:13

Are you definitely having a boy, cheerful

whatsagoodusername · 16/05/2015 19:30

Sounds fine to me in my American accent.

John William Brick, nicknamed Jack?

PuppyMonkey · 16/05/2015 19:32

I'd go for Rick Grin

ButterflyOfFreedom · 16/05/2015 19:56

I love the name Jack but didn't use it because our surname had a 'ck' sound in it too - so if I was you, I wouldn't use it. So it's a no from me.

Grantaire · 16/05/2015 20:07

I think it's lovely. People sometimes struggle with names that are two short, punchy single syllables together because our tendency is to pronounce them as trochees (putting a stress on the first syllable like in the word 'trouble'). It sounds odd to our ears to pronounce them with equal stress which is why people like a two syllable first or surname to balance it out (If it was Jackson Brick you'd stress the Jack and the Brick with a weak 'son' as balance). I don't mind it though. I think it's emphatic and striking.

rallytog1 · 16/05/2015 20:19

It is amazing. Memorable, direct, no-nonsense. It has a lovely sense of gravity - I can't see Jack Brick taking no nonsense from nobody.

FatWalda · 16/05/2015 20:35

"an American professional tennis player called Jack Sock"

Jack Sock, really? I can't be the only one who's thinking what I'm thinking Blush

hawkmcqueen · 16/05/2015 20:43

Lol at FatWalda, I wasn't thinking it but now I am!

Rhubarbgarden · 16/05/2015 22:16

Hmm. My brother has a single syllable first name and single syllable surname and he's always complained that it doesn't work, and he'd rather have had a longer first name. So I'm going to vote no. Sorry.

CheerfulYank · 16/05/2015 22:19

Nope FatWalda, I was thinking it too :o

I do like Jackson but really wanted Dawson for a middle name if I went with Jack. And can't do Jackson Dawson obviously :) If he is Will he will be William Oliver.

Oliver Dawson is a very distant third runner up. Dawson was my grandfather and great grandfather's middle name, as well as the first name of a great great uncle who was a real character, apparently. I'd love to use it but don't like William Dawson...doesn't flow, or something.

hawkmcqueen · 16/05/2015 22:32

Would you not consider Dawson as a first name? It sounds really good with surname and sibling names and has a lot of meaning?

Tonicandgin · 16/05/2015 22:35

Love the name Dawson. I know a Dawson (middle name) and he is the most lovely man (yes I'm biased)

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2015 22:40

Grin I will never look at Jack Sock the tennis player the same way again. That had never occurred to me Blush

FatWalda · 16/05/2015 23:01

Jack Dawson, nooooooo ...... Titanic! Shock

Tranquilitybaby · 16/05/2015 23:06

Too short and harsh sounding for me, but it doesn't matter what any of us think, it's your baby Smile

Ham69 · 16/05/2015 23:13

I can't see a problem with Jack Brick. A good solid name. I think it's easy to over analyse a name. Good luck op.
