Nina: Urgent opinions needed

What do people think of Nina? Is it popular at the moment? I love it but I'm a hormonal wreck so don't trust my own judgement right now. I regretted out last name choice after the hormones cleared. Help me hive mind!

Love it!

MilkThistle187 · 27/04/2015 14:36

I love it

lottiegarbanzo · 27/04/2015 14:42

Good name, feminine while purposeful and without being at all frilly.

I'd go for a longer middle name to keep options open later.

Not a popular name at the moment but one everyone recognises and can spell!

I do think 'and the neurones' but that will pass and she's a pretty good character. Mostly I think of Nina Simone, who was amazing.

bananaramadramallama · 27/04/2015 14:52

"Nina, pretty ballerina, now she is the queen of the dancing floor…"

^
This song is now refusing to leave my head!!
It's a lovely name.

IvoryMadonna · 27/04/2015 15:03

Ageless and timeless.

sweetpeame · 27/04/2015 15:06

I love it!!! I only know one, she's 2, in Ireland. I don't think it's popular in the UK but not weird/unusual. Go for it!!

runningandjumping · 27/04/2015 15:23

Sorry, but I don't like it! Sounds a bit like a negative word to me...

ByeByeButterfly · 27/04/2015 16:27

My aunt is Nina.
It means girl I believe.
I think it's pretty but not too popular.

Guin1 · 27/04/2015 16:30

Really like it, was on our list for DD. I know five - one in her 80s, one in her 40s, one who is 17, one who is 3 years and one who is 3 months old.

Merse · 27/04/2015 16:31

Very pretty. And not that common at the moment which is nice so she won't be one of 3 in the class!

QuinoaLenghi · 27/04/2015 18:05

Wow what lovely feedback. Maybe my hormones are not clouding my judgement after all. DH and I both like it which is a rare thing indeed
so I think it might be the one!

'Nina, pretty ballerina, now she is the queen of the dancing floor, this is the moment she's waiting for, just like Cinderella' Abba song
Lovely name

QuinoaLenghi · 27/04/2015 22:29

Ugh now I'm having doubts as DH suggested Gina and I said I hated it and he laughed and asked how I could hate Gina but love Nina. To me the two names have totally different feelings.

IvoryMadonna · 27/04/2015 22:52

Well, Gina is part of vagina, obviously.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 27/04/2015 23:01

My DD was very nearly Nina. I think it's lovely. It was my DH's suggestion and he also suggested Gina and Tina (along with a few other names that don't rhyme). I totally agree with you...I really really disliked Gina and I wasn't keen on Tina either...but really like Nina!

DramaAlpaca · 27/04/2015 23:38

I like it a lot. I've only ever known one, she'll be in her early 20s now.

Nina is so much nicer than Gina, and both are nicer than Tina.

lottiegarbanzo · 28/04/2015 08:34

Well Gina sounds like Jean, which is not pretty and looks like a nn for Georgina.

Nina is so good partly because it is a stand-alone name, not a nn.

QuinoaLenghi · 28/04/2015 11:12

Thanks again everyone.

I am so glad others agree that Gina is nothing like Nina (and neither is Tina!).

I love Nina because it is timeless, it works across many languages and cultures, its easy to pronounce and spell yet is not to common and its feisty to my ears. It has various means in different languages but they are all really positive: grace, mother, girl, powerful, excellent, friend....

Love it. I think it's strong and feminine!

I can imagine a Nina would totally kick the boys butt if she wanted!

Slothlorian · 28/04/2015 22:31

The only negative is that if u say it repetitively u sound a bit like an ambulance.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 28/04/2015 23:27

Slothlorian, that reminds me actually that when we were deciding a shortlist of names for our DD, we asked our son, who was 3 and obsessed with Fireman Sam at the time, which he liked best. He said his favourite was Nina because it sounded like a fire engine!

villainousbroodmare · 28/04/2015 23:30

I like it a lot. It's strong and pretty and purposeful.

lurkymclurkerson · 28/04/2015 23:33

Nina was a proper badass on the Tekken video games, if I remember correctly. It always brings to mind a very strong woman (probably because she would roundhouse kick a leopard in stilettos)

bruffin · 28/04/2015 23:42

My aunt from Cyprus is Nina but short fir Katerina

easternpromises · 29/04/2015 09:10

I like it for the reasons that you stated in your last post but, totally irrationally, I'm sure, it reminds me of the noise of sirens.

Just ignore me as it obviously doesn't make other people think of them!
