Alexandra and nicknames

DD is called Alexandra and will start nursery soon. we don't like the nicknames Alex or Lexie. We always call her her full name but I know that she'll be known by a shortening which we should tell the nursery. How about:
Allie
Alexa
Lelie
Any ideas welkome!

I really don't like Lexie but think Lex is quite cool.

Andie? It's got a retro feel I like Smile .

Will she definitely be known by a shortening?

I know an Alexandra who has made it to 7 without any nicknames or shortening. Mind you, she is the one that is determined about it, she's always saying "I'm not x, I'm Alexandra."

ZeroFunDame · 22/04/2015 10:36

GrinThere was a thread about it recently but I don't recall the conclusion. I stand by my ages old experience of Queenie being a shortening for anyone with the same name as the present Queen or any previous female queen/consort.

ZeroFunDame · 22/04/2015 10:37

"female queen" looks a bitConfused. YKWIM.

susurration · 22/04/2015 10:40

Can't you just tell them she is Alexandra if thats what you call her?

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 22/04/2015 10:41

I have a friend called Alexandra and she's usually known as Allie

runningandjumping · 22/04/2015 10:44

I have two other DC with similar style names (long classic names) and we call them full names at home but they ended up having nicknames we don;t really like because we didn't specify anything. I know that you can only control nicknames to a certain extent, but it's worth trying :-)

Just call her Alexandra! I love the name - it's very strong and full of character.

Her friends will end up calling her what she and they want!

IvoryMadonna · 22/04/2015 12:05

" I know that she'll be known by a shortening which we should tell the nursery."

Er, no. You tell them that her name is Alexandra, and that it is not to be shortened. If that's what you want.

If you are looking for alternatives, then Sandra is a contraction of Alexandra, and isn't heard so much currently. Similarly Sandy, which someone mentioned above.

Lexa
Aldi ?!

onceuponavino · 22/04/2015 15:30

LOVE Alexandra (on short list) but I agree, don't like Lexie either although I do like Alex

I think Allie is nice or Sandy. Don't hear many Sandys!

Only1scoop · 22/04/2015 15:33

Lex is nice

Lelie Confused

Alexa....not that short.

squoosh · 22/04/2015 16:03

I love this name :)

I know one who goes by the NN of Allie

blacktreaclecat · 22/04/2015 22:05

Alix with i rather than e is an option too.

StupidBloodyKindle · 22/04/2015 22:09

Sasha (russian/ukranian patronomic short form of Alexander)

MyBootsAreMuddy · 22/04/2015 22:39

I know one who is know as Xa/Xa-xa pronounced like the beginning of Zara.

runningandjumping · 22/04/2015 22:53

to be honest, we chose this name as we don't really like the current trend for cute and short girls names but now we do need a short and sweet nickname.
