I had forgottent this name until today and really like it to go with siblings Charlie and Tilly.

I know they will all have the 'ie' ending but I don't mind this, as I have gone for nn names rather than the longer versions.

What do you think of the name?

I love it. Know a few adults of various ages and a lovely 6 year old (with sibling Tilly).

YesILikeItToo · 13/04/2015 07:24

Quite old-fashioned? Feels as though it might be a nick name, like 'Queenie'. Is it? Do you care?

Haggisfish · 13/04/2015 07:26

It's a type of pie/pasty in Scotland.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 13/04/2015 07:26

It's lovely.

AwfulBeryl · 13/04/2015 07:29

I've never heard of it before, how do you pronounce it ?

tortoisesarefab · 13/04/2015 07:36

Do you mean as in short for Bridget?

sweetpeame · 13/04/2015 07:44

It's relatively commom in Ireland for women of about 70+ years old... I believe it's usually a nn for Bridget but could also be short for Bride. In my experience it's very much a granny name and not a "granny chic" one either if that impacts your decision at all. But hey, who knows, maybe it's due a comeback?!

Polgara2 · 13/04/2015 07:45

Dd1 has a friend with this name only she spells it 'Brydie' - always loved it and think it will go lovely with Charlie and Tilly

CatsCantTwerk · 13/04/2015 07:48

AwfulBeryl It is pronounced Bride ee.

My Friends dd is called Bridie, she is 3. I had never heard of it before I met her. but it does suit her.

olafisking · 13/04/2015 07:51

I know a 5 year old Bridie, first non elderly one I've come across. You certainly won't have three in a school class. I think it's sweet.

AwfulBeryl · 13/04/2015 07:54

Thanks cats, my oh so tired brain was reading it as birdie.

I like Bridie, I like a lot of ee ending names.

Candycoco · 13/04/2015 07:56

My elderly Irish aunt was called Bridie, it don't like it at all. However for a child I think it would make her sound like an Irish traveller as they use very old fashioned Irish names for their kids.

lastlines · 13/04/2015 07:58

I know a Bridie and she's so lovely it makes me like the name. But objectively I hate it. It's as though you're telling a little girl: what we want for you is for you to be some man's ickle bride.

d1157230986361b000875 · 13/04/2015 08:24

I don't mind that it is old fashioned name I like in south of the Uk so most people won't initially think of it as an Irish traveller name. I like 'ee' ending names and do like old lady names as well. But most are out due to family and friends having them :)

lastlines, I never made the Bride connection, but this doesn't put me off. I pronounce it Bry-dee.
Asleeponasunbeam - that's good to know that their are siblings Tilly and Bridie :)

Bridie is a short form of Brid ( say: Breej, a Celtic fertility and fire goddess) aka Brigid or Bridget. (There are several other versions/spellings.) A traditional alternative shortening is 'Biddy'.

As a shortening, traditionally the name was a bit generic. Bridie = any young girl, Biddy = any old woman. May be different today, of course....

I prefer longer versions such as Birgit or Birgitta. I think they are rather pretty. Am not so keen on Bridget, but have met several really nice people with the name.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 13/04/2015 10:54

Oh I like it. It's traditional but cute. It's one of those names cute on the namd peg but classy for when she grows up.
Would you name her Bridie or Bridget And use Bridie as her nn

squoosh · 13/04/2015 11:08

It's very...........poor rural Irish farmer's wife eking a living from the land circa 1934. My great aunt was one, she used to drive to mass on her tractor when she was nearly 100.

I can't really imagine it on anyone under the age of 90 to be honest but maybe people in the UK will see it differently.

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 13/04/2015 12:48

It's a type of pie!!

MrsJoeDolan · 13/04/2015 13:12

My Irish Nan's name

SunnyBaudelaire · 13/04/2015 13:14

it is awful and what I call my DD when she is being vile as it is short for 'Bride of Chucky'.
IRL though I think it is short for Bridget and is a real old lady name.

Skirting · 13/04/2015 14:02

My 70 year old mother's nickname (she's technically Brigid) when she was growing up - though she switched to 'Breda' when she left for the bright city light! She would be tickled but also horrified that someone was considering calling their baby this in 2015.

I can only tell you the name's connotations in Ireland, which may or may not be of any concern to you, OP. It is a deeply hick, very bog-rural name, associated with women who are now 70 plus. And as someone else said, also very generic - I can think of numerous fictional examples where a comedy-religious, rural Auntie Bridie keeps pigs in the kitchen, says the rosary every ten minutes, never puts her false teeth in unless the parish priest visits, and thinks any woman who uses tampons is a hussy.

In Ireland it's certainly in no danger of an old lady chic revival.

shakemysilliesout · 13/04/2015 14:17

My mother is irish but I am from and live in London. I love bridie- I know a cool teenager one. No old lady thoughts from me. Mary/ Josephine always make me think either old or Irish traveller.

Anyway, I believe her off Dawsons creek has a daughter called birdie. As we are also discussing the name birdie on this thread. Not Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams, the other one.

squoosh · 13/04/2015 14:17

I think Skirting just about sums it up!

heliotrope · 13/04/2015 15:15

It goes well with your names. In London here and know a stunning, professional high flying one. Don't know any children with the name but think it would be a good baby or child name. Go for it!

glittertits · 13/04/2015 15:22

I know one in her early 20s. Gorgeous name.

Teenage sister also informs me that Charlie and Bridie McDonnell feature in the Zoella YouTube crowd (Birdie being the sister of the much more 'famous' Charlieissocoollike).
